Undoing the Bush Disaster

In Final Legal Act, Bush Appeals Spy Ruling

David Kravets, Wired Magazine Threat Level Blog: "With a mere 64 minutes left in its last full day in office, the Bush administration asked a federal judge to stay enforcement of a ruling that would keep alive a lawsuit which tests whether the president can bypass the Congress and eavesdrop on Americans without warrants."

Obama Hosts Labor Leaders, Will Undo Bush Orders

Philip Elliott, The Associated Press: "President Barack Obama is playing to one of the Democratic Party's most reliable constituencies - organized labor - reversing a number of his predecessor's executive orders that critics regard as anti-union. Labor leaders were to visit the White House for a second consecutive day Friday, where, a union official said, Obama was to abolish four Bush-era directives that unions opposed and then reintroduce Vice President Joe Biden's task force focused on the middle class."

Fresh bid for phone mast in Barnards Green

4:26pm Wednesday 21st January 2009

MOBILE phone company O2 is making a fresh attempt to put a mast in Barnards Green.

Last August, the network was refused planning permission to put a 12.5-metre mast at the Sixways industrial estate.

The decision by a Malvern Hills District Council planning committee follows an earlier refusal of a 15-metre mast at the same site in 2006.

In both cases, local people made strenuous objections. They said the mast was too close to homes, shops and businesses, plus a nursing home, the Chase school and the Malvern College playing fields.

WEDNESDAY NOON: Campaigners have promised to fight to the bitter end and camp out on the street to block a mobile phone giant building a mast.

Vodafone unexpectedly turned up to the corner of Sapcote and Grange Drives to start work on Saturday but residents are planning to prevent it happening.

Lyn Summerland who lives opposite the site said: "Why does it have to go here, why can't it go in a field? It is just ridiculous to put it here. I've got two grandchildren who live across the road, I don't want them to grow up with cancer.

The reversals of market wisdom

by Jacob Sullum

Remember when Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson warned us, back in September, that the economy was about to collapse unless Congress immediately authorized him to spend $700 billion on ‘troubled assets’ held by banks? Remember when he said banks would never lend again as long as they remained saddled with these bad investments? You do remember? So it’s not just me. I was beginning to think I had dreamed the whole thing. In November, Paulson said the Treasury Department would not be buying any troubled assets after all. Instead it would use the $700 billion to buy the banks themselves, which I could almost swear Paulson had said was a bad idea a couple of months before... (for publication 02/09)

US Stocks slide in Dow average’s worst Inauguration Day drop

U.S. stocks sank, sending the Dow Jones Industrial Average to its worst Inauguration Day decline, as speculation banks must raise more capital sent financial shares to an almost 14-year low. State Street Corp., the largest money manager for institutions, tumbled 59 percent after unrealized bond losses almost doubled. Wells Fargo & Co. and Bank of America Corp. slumped more than 23 percent on an analyst’s prediction that they’ll need to take steps to shore up their balance sheets. The Dow’s 4 percent slide was the most on an Inauguration Day in the measure’s 112-year history, according to data compiled by Bloomberg and the Stock Trader’s Almanac...
