Globalization Is the Contagion: On the Idiocy of Interdependency

Kent Welton, Op-Ed News: "Were there no European union there would be no Greek crisis beyond Greece, Greece would have retained its currency and paid its price for budget problems in the value of its currency. But the stitching together of so many diverse countries and cultures into one unit, with one currency, has presented far more problems than it has solved and, worse, has removed national and cultural liberty, sovereignty, as well as necessary freedom for tariff-based re-balancing mechanisms."

The state: Who does it protect?

Center for a Stateless Society
by Darian Worden

05/04/10

Government’s typical answer to security threats is to respond with bigger bureaucracies (more people to share irresponsibility) and more repressive, stronger-looking enforcement. Organizations that exist because of, and in pursuit of, consensual association are generally more flexible, and do not waste time and cooperative potential trying to become the dominant bureaucracy in the power structure. When a bureaucratic mindset conflates the organization’s power with the safety of people it is assigned to protect, the incentive is to consolidate and expand power, not to work with people outside your tribe for mutual benefit...

Why America faces a big fat Greek bankruptcy

Root for America
by Wayne Allyn Root

05/05/10

Greece’s problem is Europe’s problem … and following closely behind, America’s problem too. We’re all Greeks now. Quite simply, Greece’s problem starts and ends with government employee unions. There are too many government employees (1 in 3 Greek citizens works for government); their salaries are way too high; their bonuses can only be described as insane (2 months for each public employee); their pensions are ridiculous (retirement far too young and free healthcare for life); and their government jobs are guaranteed for life. Sounds crazy, right? Sounds like in Greece the inmates must be running the asylum. Except America has the exact same problem...

Terrorism and America’s “way of life”

Glenn Beck gets it right

The Nation
by Robert Scheer

05/05/10

The Times Square car bomb, while certainly capable of inflicting death on scores of innocents and destroying nearby structures, hardly qualifies for WMD designation and indeed would seem to mock our highly warranted concern over such threats. The case is also a reminder that the massive defense budgets for high-tech warfare that have pushed close to a trillion dollars a year since the 9/11 attack are beside the point in countering terrorists who turn firecrackers into bombs. This man was caught because of old-fashioned police work, after officers were alerted initially by a vigilant Times Square T-shirt peddler. And while some Republican politicians, led by Sen. John McCain, attempted to turn this into an occasion for attacking civil liberties and stoking the Miranda rights debate, it is clear that the investigation moved forward in an extremely effective and expeditious manner with full regard for constitutional protections. Credit Glenn Beck of Fox News for breaking with that sort of demagoguery and asserting that the rule of law is basic to our freedom and not just an inconvenient indulgence...

Lessons From the Past: Arizona, Immigration and Ethnic Studies

Derek Chang, Truthout: "In a little less than two weeks, my son's fourth-grade class will visit a historic site called the Eight Square Schoolhouse in Dryden, New York. Designed by a local carpenter and built in 1827, it is the only octagonal schoolhouse still standing in New York State. It was used as a school for some 114 years, and the building's significance, I'm told, lies in its shape. Octagonal buildings were thought to be sturdier, possess better ventilation, provide more interior space and allow for the teacher to be the focus of the students' attention to a greater degree."

Powerless in Arizona

The American Prospect
by Gabriel Arana

05/13/10

The story of Hispanics’ political powerlessness in Arizona is partly a story about big demographic trends. Since the 1990s, the state has seen an influx of two groups: white Midwesterners and undocumented workers from Mexico. The swell of Midwestern retirees and families to the Phoenix area follows a pattern of migration from post-industrial cities in the middle of the country to the Sun Belt, where the cost of living is lower and economic opportunities more fruitful. In addition, according to the Department of Homeland Security, the rate of illegal immigration to the state jumped 70 percent between 2000 and 2008. Experts say the influx of the two groups has led to a cultural clash and strengthened the conservative base in Maricopa County, which dominates state politics...

Paul Kiel, ProPublica: "Millions of homeowners face losing their homes in the continuing foreclosure crisis, but homeowners often have more than the struggling economy and slumping house prices to worry about: Disorganization within the big banks that service mortgages has made a bad problem worse."

A "Lost Decade" Ahead For Housing

By Mike Whitney

"The U.S. government's massive share of the nation's mortgage market grew even larger during the first quarter. Government-related entities backed 96.5% of all home loans during the first quarter, up from 90% in 2009, according to Inside Mortgage Finance.

Wall Street Profits, Subsidies and Lobbyists

Jim Hightower, Truthout: "Citigroup has just announced that its profits for just the first three months of this year totaled an incredible $4.4 billion, Goldman Sachs' haul was $3.5 billion, JPMorgan Chase grabbed $3.3 billion and Bank of America took $3.2 billion."

Rep. Bob Ney After Prison: "Money Is the Problem"

Video

Laura Flanders, GRITtv: "Get the money out of Washington. It's an ongoing refrain now, from the left and even from those in the Tea Party movement. Too much corruption, too little trust. Jack Abramoff, the superstar lobbyist whose spectacular fall brought down then-Majority Leader Tom DeLay, was the very public face of the problem of lobbying when he headed off to jail, and he is the subject of Alex Gibney's newest documentary, 'Casino Jack and the United States of Money.'"

Wall Street's Big Banks Are the Problem

Robert Reich, Robert Reich's Blog: "Why is the Federal Trade Commission threatening Apple with a possible lawsuit for abusing its economic power, but not even raising an eyebrow about the huge and growing economic (and political) muscle of JP Morgan Chase or any of the other four remaining giant banks on Wall Street?"
