Financial Chaos And The Smell Of Napalm In The Morning

By Peter Ewart

Stop bailing out the banks and financiers. Let them fall. In their place, set up public non-profit banking institutions, similar to credit unions, and ban the hedge funds, currency manipulators, and other speculators as pirates who constitute a threat to human society.

Can America bring peace to the world?

Liberty For All
by Harry Browne

I would guess that Thomas Barnett has never bothered to examine the history of government programs — and the sad record of failure after failure after failure. It isn’t just the War on Drugs or the War on Poverty or the War on Illiteracy that has failed to fulfill its promises. There hasn’t been a single American war in this century or the last in which the U.S. government actually achieved the results that were promised when it went to war... Afghan war costs now outpace Iraq’s

USA Today

The monthly cost of the war in Afghanistan, driven by troop increases and fighting on difficult terrain, has topped Iraq costs for the first time since 2003 and shows no sign of letting up. Pentagon spending in February, the most recent month available, was $6.7 billion in Afghanistan compared with $5.5 billion in Iraq. As recently as fiscal year 2008, Iraq was three times as expensive; in 2009, it was twice as costly...

Feting a fetid war

by Ivan Eland

To smooth over the stormy relationship with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, President Barack Obama is throwing out the red carpet in Washington, D.C., for Karzai and his entourage. Vice President Joe Biden, who in the past has erupted in open hostility toward Karzai, is holding a ‘kiss-and-make-up’ dinner for the Afghan leader. All of this hoopla is the belated recognition by the Obama administration that Karzai is weak and corrupt but is the only game in town in Afghanistan. Of course, if the Vietnam War is any indication, being chained to a local leader with no legitimacy at home is usually the death knell of the entire war effort...

Mr. Obama: Tear Down This War!

Bernard Weiner, The Crisis Papers: "Many of us progressives now in our 60s and 70s spent years of our young lives in 'The Sixties' trying to stop the U.S. war in Vietnam. Many in this cohort were beaten, jailed, lost jobs, suffered discrimination. We were, after all, considered 'unpatriotic' and 'traitors' by government leaders and their rightwing supporters."

Secret Recording of Erik Prince Reveals Previously Undisclosed Blackwater Ops

Amy Goodman and Sharif Abdel Kouddous, Democracy NOW!: "Investigative journalist and Democracy Now! correspondent Jeremy Scahill obtains a rare audio recording of a recent, private speech delivered by Erik Prince, the owner of Blackwater, to a friendly audience in January. The speech, which Prince attempted to keep from public consumption, provides a stunning glimpse into his views and future plans and reveals details of previously undisclosed activities of Blackwater."

What a Mess Our Oil Addiction Is Causing

Jim Hightower, Truthout: "Luckily, as our country tries to cope with another oozing oil disaster, we have political leaders with the insight, expertise and cool heads to analyze the problem precisely and guide us to rational long-term solutions. For example, Gov. Rick Perry of Texas."

The Dementia of Petroleum Addiction?

Craig Collins Ph.D.: "Petroleum executives assure us that their giant tankers and offshore oil rigs pose no danger to the environment; coal company CEOs insist that their mines are safe and that blasting off mountaintops is ecologically benign; natural gas companies claim that 'fracking' deep underground geological formations will not contaminate fresh water aquifers; and nuclear power promoters tell us not to worry about core meltdowns or the disposal of millions of tons of highly radioactive waste."

Louisiana Lawmakers: BP Can't Handle Gulf Oil Spill Cleanup Anymore

Bill Sasser, The Christian Science Monitor: "Calls are mounting for the state of Louisiana and the federal government to wrest control of the Gulf oil spill cleanup from BP. Two lawmakers say BP seems 'overwhelmed.'"

BP is a serial scofflaw, earning billions while assessed pocket change in fines, penalties and settlements for a company its size. Despite its history of repeated violations, it’s allowed to conduct business as usual because effective crackdowns aren’t imposed in an environment of regulatory laxity. And, of course, it’s as true across the board in deference to all predatory giants in all sectors, preying on the public and environment for profit with complicit government help...

Oil spill: Who is liable?

The Free Liberal
by Fred E. Foldvary

The ‘polluter pays’ principle is ethical, efficient, and sustainable. When there is an oil spill such as the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, the involved oil companies are morally responsible to compensate society for the damage. But such is not legally required today. In 1990 the U.S. federal government enacted the Oil Pollution Act that set a $75 million liability cap for financial damage and a $500 million cap for environmental damage. The current oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, reportedly caused by a methane gas explosion, will impose damages of over $10 billion...

Halliburton: Oil spill fall guy?

Mother Jones
by Kate Sheppard

During Tuesday’s Senate hearings on the catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, BP, the operator of the Deepwater Horizon rig, came in for plenty of tough questions. But the focus is increasingly shifting to the role of Halliburton, which poured the cement for the rig, as well as for another operation that spilled oil off the coast of Australia last August...
