Gulf Tides: Monitoring BP's Drilling Disaster

Why is BP still in charge of the spill site?

Mother Jones
by Kate Sheppard

With the Gulf spill now one month in, some lawmakers and environmentalists are starting to question why BP is still in charge of the containment and clean-up effort. The company’s attempts to cut off the spill have failed. The chemicals BP is spreading in the Gulf might be creating entirely new problems. And independent estimates of the spill indicate that the company is grossly underestimating the size of the disaster. So why is BP still running the show? The government has launched an unprecedented response. But when it comes to crucial issues of control and decision-making, it seems like the oil giant is still in the driver’s seat...

The specter of sovereign insolvency is haunting the world

Have we crossed the point of no return?

Ludwig von Mises Institute
by Philipp Bagus

A specter is haunting the world, and especially Europe: the specter of a sovereign insolvency. The acute sovereign-debt crisis is largely the result of government interventions in response to the financial crisis. As Austrian business-cycle theory explains, the credit expansion of the fractional-reserve-banking system had caused an unsustainable boom...

Obama Administration Immigration Deportations Exceed Bush’s Record

Child Asks Michelle Obama if Her Mother Will Be Deported

Michelle Obama fielded an awkward question on the immigration debate on Wednesday. It came from a worried young girl who seemed to say that her mother is an illegal immigrant.

Respect Immigrants, Deport BP

Randall Amster J.D., Ph.D, Truthout: "My family and I joined tens of thousands in the streets of Phoenix this weekend to march against SB 1070 and for the human rights of immigrants in America. The crowd was ethnically diverse, filled with righteous indignation, creatively colorful and utterly without the fear that has plagued them for years. It was a remarkable demonstration at a critical time and I am more convinced than ever of the basic decency and common humanity of those being demonized by some factions as criminals and undesirables."

Venter Takes Genetic Engineering to 'Extreme New Level'

Artificial Life: Have Scientists Created A Monster?

The creation of a living being in a laboratory by scientific showman Craig Venter is one of the staples of science fiction. Now it is a scientific fact. Yesterday's announcement of the birth of a 'synthetic cell' - made by injecting a bacterium shell with genetic material created from scratch by scientists - raises many questions. Depending on your viewpoint, it is either a powerful testament to human ingenuity or a terrible example of hubris - and the first step on a very dangerous road. The potential is huge - but so are the dangers. It is possible to imagine a synthetic microbe going on the rampage, perhaps wiping out all the world's crop plants or even humanity itself. Synthetic biology also challenges our most cherished notions of what life itself actually is. Non-scientists might not realise that we have, as yet, no proper definition of life. it is hard to escape the feeling that a boundary has been crossed. The problem is, it is far from clear where we go from here.

Common Plant Vector Injects Genes into Human Cells – A GMO Nightmare!

Barbara H. Peterson on April 18th, 2010

A paper published earlier this year reports that T-DNA can be transferred to the chromosomes of human cancer cells…The paper shows that human cancer cells along with neuron and kidney cells were transformed with the Agrobacterium T-DNA. Such observations should raise alarm for those who use Agrobacterium in the laboratory [for genetic modification].

Protesters Demand Problem Solving, Not Demonization

Sarah Lazare, Truthout: "Vietnam War-era veteran and member of the Phoenix Veterans for Peace chapter, David Winkler, was one of 50,000 people who converged in Phoenix on May 29th to protest Arizona Senate Bill 1070. 'In Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as on the U.S.-Mexico border, the U.S. is attempting to use the military to solve social problems,' he said. 'Immigration is not a military problem, and it should not be dealt with by the military."'

Supplanting the US Constitution: War, national emergency and “continuity of government”

by Peter Dale Scott

The National Emergencies Act, one of the post-Watergate reforms that Vice-President Cheney so abhorred, specifies that: ‘Not later than six months after a national emergency is declared, and not later than the end of each six-month period thereafter that such emergency continues, each House of Congress shall meet to consider a vote on a joint resolution to determine whether that emergency shall be terminated’ (50 U.S.C. 1622, 2002). Yet in nine years Congress has not once met to discuss the State of Emergency declared by George W. Bush in response to 9/11, a State of Emergency that remains in effect today. Appeals to the Congress to meet its responsibilities to review COG have fallen on deaf ears.” (05/22/10)
