Terrorism and America’s “way of life”

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G. Hornberger

In a press conference yesterday about Faisal Shahzad, the Pakistani-American who allegedly tried to blow up the car bomb in Times Square, Attorney General Eric Holder stated, ‘The reality that there is a constant threat from those who wish to do us harm simply because of our way of life.’ We haven’t yet heard any public statements from Shahzad himself. But my hunch is that the ‘way of life’ that allegedly motivated him has to do with what the U.S. government has been doing to people in the Middle East...

Glenn Beck gets it right

The Nation
by Robert Scheer

The Times Square car bomb, while certainly capable of inflicting death on scores of innocents and destroying nearby structures, hardly qualifies for WMD designation and indeed would seem to mock our highly warranted concern over such threats. The case is also a reminder that the massive defense budgets for high-tech warfare that have pushed close to a trillion dollars a year since the 9/11 attack are beside the point in countering terrorists who turn firecrackers into bombs. This man was caught because of old-fashioned police work, after officers were alerted initially by a vigilant Times Square T-shirt peddler. And while some Republican politicians, led by Sen. John McCain, attempted to turn this into an occasion for attacking civil liberties and stoking the Miranda rights debate, it is clear that the investigation moved forward in an extremely effective and expeditious manner with full regard for constitutional protections. Credit Glenn Beck of Fox News for breaking with that sort of demagoguery and asserting that the rule of law is basic to our freedom and not just an inconvenient indulgence...

Treatment of Muslims blamed for plot

Set in motion just two months ago, the plan to explode a sports utility vehicle in Times Square was born of Faisal Shahzad's anger about US treatment of Muslims, a law enforcement source has said.

Joe Lieberman bill would strip suspects' citizenship

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) thinks he's found a work-around on the whole Miranda rights debate for U.S. citizens accused of terrorism: Strip their citizenship and ship them to Guantanamo.

Here's how Joe Lieberman's citizenship-stripping bill would work

Two things you should know about this: First, it isn't just some paranoid liberal nightmare. It's actually moving forward.

Shahzad on U.S. Travel Security List Since 1999

Would-be Times Square bomber Faisal Shahzad appeared on a U.S government travel lookout list - Traveler Enforcement Compliance System (TECS) - between 1999 and 2008 because he brought approximately $80,000 cash or cash instruments into the United States.

Terror Watch List Counter: A Million Plus

Why are there so many names on the U.S. government's terrorist list?

By Matt Taibbi

Memo to those Tea Party activists out there who've been howling about those liberal wusses in the Obama Justice Department who read Faisal Shahzad his Miranda rights: congratulations. You've just opened the door for a major new expansion of government power.

Eugene Robinson: "The system worked. Authorities responded to the attempted Times Square bombing about as well as anyone possibly could - proving, once again, that viewing terrorism exclusively in a military context is wrong. It's a police matter, too."
