No Progress Report

The New York Times writes: "With the American public in despair over the Iraq war and key members of his own party deserting him, President Bush is still trying to twist reality to claim that his failed effort is worth sticking with. Yesterday, the White House issued a report card claiming that Iraq's government had made limited progress on some political and security goals. And Mr. Bush insisted that not only was it not the time to talk about withdrawing American troops, but that he still believes that 'the fight can be won.'"

We're All Gonna Die

William Rivers Pitt of Truthout writes: "The recipe is simple, like the directions on the back of a shampoo bottle. Damaging reports of Bush administrations malfeasance emerge. Warnings of imminent terrorist-borne doom immediately follow, all spread far and wide by said Bush administration. Lather, rinse, repeat. There are many more instances of this curious timing to be found, but apparently, no one in the administration is concerned this dubious pattern - spreading fear among the populace to change the subject, an act of terrorism itself - might start to wear thin."

MOBILE FIRM SNUBS SOUTHWELL MAST PROTESTERS

11:00 - 13 July 2007

A mobile phone firm has refused to meet angry parents campaigning against plans to install a mast near a school.

Company O2 refused to meet the No Masts in Southwell Action Group to discuss residents' concerns.

It has refused to look at alternative sites for the mast despite opposition from parents, governors and staff at both Lowe's Wong schools - which are near the proposed site. More than 1,300 residents have signed a petition against the plan.

Iraq Report May Mean Longer US Surge

Robert Burns of the Associated Press reports: "While many in Congress are pushing President Bush to alter course in Iraq by September if not sooner, his new status report on the war strongly implies that the administration believes its military strategy will take many more months to meet its goals. That's a military calculation at odds with an emerging political consensus in Washington on bringing the troops home soon."

I have just written to the Health Protection Agency about the effects of these technologies using pulsed microwave radiation on a percentage of the population and they way the HPA, mobile phone operators and the Government continue to ignore Sir William Stewart's recommendations for a precautionary approach and further research.

[ //www.buergerwelle.de/pdf/dr_jmeara_hpax.pdf ]

The issues of the vulnerability of our children; cancer clusters around mobile phone and TETRA masts; the growing numbers who are electro hypersensitive; and the non-sensitive who share the same symptoms or become ill unexpectedly should not be ignored to "wait for the science". Monitoring and good honest research should be in place now. These new technologies are untried and untested. There is no evidence that they are safe.

Panorama didn't have the time to cover enough! Those who attack this program must surely have hidden agendas to ignore the alarming rise in "anecdotal evidence" and the suffering of humans and animal life.

Cheers as mast plans refused

By Kelly Barker

THREE out of four alternative phone mast sites have been refused by Wirral's planning committee in the wake of a controversial council blunder.

Scores of petitioners cheered as councillors turned down T-Mobile's plans for the "more visually intrusive" masts based a stone's throw away from the previous applications. And protestors branded the new proposals as "insanity."

Efforts Renewed to Destroy Ugandan Reserve for Sugar Biofuel

Rainforest Portal a project of Ecological Internet, Inc.

//www.rainforestportal.org/ -- Rainforest Portal //www.rainforestportal/news/ -- Rainforest Newsfeed

July 13, 2007

OVERVIEW & COMMENTARY by Dr. Glen Barry, Ecological Internet

No rainforest is protected for long. And in the case of Uganda's Mabira forest reserve -- a vital ecosystem near the capital -- the President has pulled a massive bait and switch. There were strong indications a couple months ago that plans to clear a large part of this protected rainforest were to be scrapped. Yet now President Yoweri Museveni is trying again with renewed vigor to push through legislation that would strip the forest of its protected status to produce sugar for biofuels. The Mabira Forest Reserve, on the north shore of Lake Victoria, is home to 300 bird species as well as rare primates, and plays a vital role in the country's ecosystem, storing carbon and regulating rainfall. Given 50% of Uganda's forests have been lost since the 1970s, and a current rate of deforestation of some 2.2 percent, it is ludicrous to think more deforestation will lead to economic gain -- au contraire, at some point ecosystems will collapse leading to even greater poverty. Earlier in the year 8,627 Ecological Internet action network participants sent some 1,833,279 protest emails asking the Forestry and parliament to intervene. This was in support of strong protest in country including a boycott of the sugar company involved. Given that this rainforest give-away violates commitments made to the World Bank, and strong parliamentarian opposition, there are two likely avenues of protest in the near future. Sadly Ecological Internet was wrong on this one and the fight continues apace. g.b.

Protect Uganda's Mabira Rainforest Preserve from Sugar Production for Biofuel

Let Scoul Sugar of the Indian Mehta Group know rainforests and their ecological services including water, climate and biodiversity are more important than sugar which can be grown elsewhere //www.climateark.org/alerts/send.asp?id=uganda

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni continues to pursue legally dubious plans to destroy large areas of the Mabira Forest Reserve, Uganda's most important intact and protected rainforest, to produce sugar for biofuels. Some one-third of the reserve, about 7,000 hectares of an area which has been protected since 1932, will lose its protection for sugar cane production by the Mehta Group of India's "Sugar Corporation of Uganda Limited" (Scoul). Earlier indications had been that the project was to be reviewed and cancelled, illustrating once again that no rainforest is protected for long... What is so exciting is that this cyber-protest is in support of one of Africa's first grassroots modern ecological protest campaigns - with local peoples organizing boycotts against Scoul sugar company, setting up cyber-petitions and text messaging via cell phones to organize protests. A dramatic discussion is being held in Ugandan society and in the media regarding the legitimacy of giving away forest reserves to private business interests. Efforts to save Mabira rainforest are a spontaneous, home-grown rainforest conservation protest that deserves the international community's continued support... Please contact the entire Mehta Group below; as well as the Ugandan parliament, ministries and embassies, and insist that plans to produce sugar as a biofuel in Mabira protected forest by Mehta Group's Scoul sugar be abandoned. Let them know it is unacceptable to clear protected ancient rainforests for sugar production to produce biofuels, and the Mehta Group will be held accountable if the project proceeds.

New site agreed after phone mast blunder

Over 1000 independent studies, linking phone masts electro magnetic radiation with serious ill health including cancer, confirm that masts should not be sited within 350 metres of schools or housing. Phone operators dismiss such research, alleging that their own studies suggests no health risk. However last month the national press revealed that T-Mobile covered up the damaging results of their own research. The Ecolog Institute, a research organisation which examines the health effects of mobile phones, was commissioned by T-Mobile to investigate the possible health risks of mobile phone masts. The 2003 Ecolog report confirmed:

'Given the results of the present epidemiological studies, it can be concluded that electromagnetic fields with frequencies in the mobile telecommunications range do play a role in the development of cancer. This is particularly notable for tumours of the central nervous system.'

Wohlfahrtsverbände haben Glück mit billigen Ein-Euro-Jobs

Gemeindebriefe vom Ein-Euro-Jobber.

„Ein-Euro-Jobs sind inzwischen längst zu einem festen Bestandteil hiesiger Vorstellungen von einer gelungenen Beschäftigungspolitik geworden und in weiten Teilen der Bevölkerung akzeptiert. Gleichwohl häuft sich die Kritik an der praktischen Umsetzung und der Effizienz dieser Jobs. So wurde vom Bundesrechnungshof schon frühzeitig gerügt, dass bei fast einem Viertel der Maßnahmen die Förderungsvoraussetzungen nicht vorlagen;

A war for oil

from Reason to Freedom
by CJ Stone

07/12/07

[A]s we heard in the recent National Intelligence Estimate, al-Qaeda are now better positioned to strike the West than it has been since September 11th 2001. Al-Qaeda is ‘operationally stronger than a year ago’ and has ‘regrouped to an extent not seen since 2001,’ we were told. ‘They are showing greater and greater ability to plan attacks in Europe and the United States. …’ In other words, despite over six years of bombings and tactics designed to dismantle it; despite the war on terror and the attacks on our civil liberties; despite Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay; despite extraordinary rendition and the torture that goes with it; despite possibly up 655,000 dead in Iraq alone (most of them Muslims); despite all of this, al-Qaeda are stronger than ever. Kind of makes you wonder what the last six years have been about doesn’t it?

Gonzales should return Bush’s loyalty … by resigning

Fox News
by Susan Estrich

07/12/07

If government service were an Outward Bound experience, Alberto Gonzales would be the hands-down winner. The fact that he has survived this long, that he is still there notwithstanding the drip-drip of bad news about his management of the DOJ, is a testament to the man’s endurance skills, not to mention the too often blind loyalty of his boss in the large White House. But enough is enough...

Defining executive privilege

Boston Globe
by Cass R. Sunstein

07/12/07

In their struggle over documents relating to the replacement of US attorneys, the president and Congress have downplayed a critical point: The doctrine of executive privilege remains a constitutional wilderness, and courts have done little to sort out the problem. Because the law is so wide open, both President Bush and the congressional Democrats have made plausible arguments. In any judicial proceeding, the outcome would be hard to predict; neither side has reason for great confidence. The Constitution does not refer to executive privilege at all, and some ’strict constructions’ believe that the whole idea is a constitutional myth. But presidents have long insisted that in order to exercise their constitutional authority, they need to be able to keep their own communications confidential...

Myths of the war on terrorism

Reason
by Steve Chapman

07/12/07

For anyone who has grown complacent about the danger of terrorism, the incidents in London and Glasgow were supposed to provide a jolt of reality. As former federal prosecutor Andrew McCarthy put it, ‘these foiled attacks are best understood as new rounds in a long, global war, provoked by the challenge of radical Islam.’ Here was proof that the jihadists are still out there, ready to strike at the moment of their choosing. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff clearly agrees. On a visit Tuesday to the Chicago Tribune, he said he has a ‘gut feeling’ an attack may be imminent. ‘The intent to attack us remains as strong as it was on Sept. 10, 2001,’ he declared. Well, no one in that job is ever going to say the danger has been overstated. But the truth is that intent and ability are not the same thing. Though, al Qaeda may — emphasize ‘may’ — still have the capacity to mount the occasional major operation, that doesn’t mean terrorism should be treated as an omnipresent, existential threat. In reality, this fight bears only a faint resemblance to a real war...

All Hail the Prophetic Gut!

Keith Olbermann

Keith Olbermann of MSNBC offers a new, special comment on Michael Chertoff's "gut feeling" report on terror threats to the US stating: "I have pondered this supreme expression of diminished expectations for parts of three days now. I have concluded that there are only five possible explanations for Mr. Chertoff's remarkable revelations about his transcendently important counterterrorism stomach."

Explaining Michael Chertoff's counterterrorism stomach

Video and Transcript: Special Comment By Keith Olbermann

You have by now heard the remark - instantly added to our through-the-looking-glass lexicon of the 21st century, a time when we suddenly started referring to this country as "the homeland," as if anybody here has used that term since Charles Lindbergh or the German-American Bund in 1940. Michael Chertoff's "gut feeling."

Charles Goyette Interviews Ray McGovern

Fomer CIA analyst Ray McGovern gives his view of DHS head Chertoff's "gut feeling" that something very bad is going to happen, 'faith-based' intelligence in general, the actual threat of terrorist attacks versus our government's hysterical scare-mongering - due largely to the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq.

Is war with Iran inevitable?

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

07/13/07

In invading Iraq, we created a Shi’ite theocracy, ruled by death squads and radical mullahs: the so-called Shia crescent is the bastard offspring of our own promiscuously interventionist policy. One had only to look at a map and have a nodding acquaintance with the history and ethno-religious composition of the region to see that post-war Iraq would be vulnerable to Iranian influence and even dominance. To offset this disastrous ‘blowback,’ we are turning on a dime and aligning ourselves — at least rhetorically — with allies of the barbarians who brought down the World Trade Center and murdered some 3,000 Americans. Forgotten in all this maneuvering and backtracking is the security of the United States and the pursuit of legitimate American interests in the region, none of which are served by our reckless, drunken veering from Shi’ite to Sunni ‘allies.’ At this point, unless the American people wake up in time — which I very much doubt — war with Iran seems all but inevitable...

Bush dismisses CIA leak as old news

San Gabriel Valley Tribune

07/12/07

President Bush always said he would wait to talk about the CIA leak case until after the investigation into his administration’s role. On Thursday, he skipped over that step and pronounced the matter old news hardly worth discussing. ‘It’s run its course,’ he said. ‘Now we’re going to move on’...

It’s finally time for Bush to answer questions about Libby

Salon
by Joe Conason

07/13/07

For four years, every reporter who asked the president or his press secretaries any question about the Wilson matter has received essentially the same non-responsive response: The president and the White House staff could not talk about the matter so long as the special counsel was actively pursuing the case. That tired excuse no longer works. Now that the leak prosecution has ended with Bush’s silencing of Libby — the only potential stool pigeon who could implicate him and Vice President Cheney in the vicious and unpatriotic ‘outing’ of Valerie Plame Wilson — he says instead that it is time to move on. Yet all of the lingering questions still require real answers...

House Votes to Force Bush to Withdraw US Troops From Iraq

David S. Rosen reports for Bloomberg.com: "The House of Representatives voted to require the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq by April 2008, defying President George W. Bush's veto threat and his request today for time to allow his war strategy to succeed. The chamber's 223-201 vote to begin a withdrawal within 120 days occurred hours after Bush released an interim progress report that said the Iraqi government has failed so far to meet several key political goals even as a military offensive has improved security."

The Other War: Iraq Vets Bear Witness

By Chris Hedges and Laila al-Arian

Over the past several months The Nation has interviewed fifty combat veterans of the Iraq War from around the United States in an effort to investigate the effects of the four-year-old occupation on average Iraqi civilians. These combat veterans, some of whom bear deep emotional and physical scars, and many of whom have come to oppose the occupation, gave vivid, on-the-record accounts. They described a brutal side of the war rarely seen on television screens or chronicled in newspaper accounts.
