Ohio's 2004 Presidential Election Records Are Destroyed or Missing

Steven Rosenfeld, of Alternet, reports: "Two-thirds of Ohio counties have destroyed or lost their 2004 presidential ballots and related election records, according to letters from county election officials to the Ohio Secretary of State, Jennifer Brunner. The lost records violate Ohio law, which states federal election records must be kept for 22 months after Election Day, and a US District Court order issued last September that the 2004 ballots be preserved while the court hears a civil rights lawsuit alleging voter suppression of African-American voters in Columbus."

Bush Outsourcing Intelligence to Private Contractors

"Over the past six years, a quiet revolution has occurred in the intelligence community toward wide-scale outsourcing to corporations and away from the long-established practice of keeping operations in US government hands, with only select outsourcing of certain jobs to independently contracted experts ... The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) revealed in May that 70 percent of the intelligence budget goes to contractors," writes R.J. Hillhouse for The Nation.

The crash that could come

Boston Globe
by Robert Kuttner

Historically, October has been the month for big financial busts. But this year, October could come early. Investors and ordinary citizens have good reason to worry about a perfect economic storm: a deepening loss of confidence in the dollar leading to higher interest rates; the higher rates bringing a crashing end to a hedge-fund, private equity, and merger binge that has depended heavily on cheap borrowed money; the boom in bait-and-switch mortgages ending in a morning-after of rising defaults and sinking housing values; inflationary pressures in food, oil, and other commodities leading to still higher interest rates — all unsettling stock and credit markets and putting a new squeeze on consumers borrowed to the hilt. The historical parallels aren’t comforting...

“Government of the people, by the people and for the people”, or not?

The Price of Liberty
by Robert Greenslade

When President Abraham Lincoln uttered these 11 words in his Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863, he could not have known they would be transformed into the popular perception of the Constitution for the United States. This perception has become so ingrained in the minds of modern Americans that it is almost sacrilegious to question it. Since the federal government derives all its power from the Constitution, and that government claims it was granted unlimited power over the lives of the people, the true nature of the Constitution should be important to every American. Therefore, the author decided to construct a simple 2 question quiz to help the reader determine if this perception is fact or fiction...

The really smart, serious, credible Iraq experts

by Glenn Greenwald

What is the most vivid and compelling evidence of how broken our political system is? It is that the exact same people who urged us into the war in Iraq, were wrong in everything they said, and issued one false assurance after the next as the war failed, continue to be the same people held up as our Serious Iraq Experts. The exact ‘experts’ to whom we listened in 2002 and 2003 are the same exact establishment ‘experts’ now. Hence, today we have yet another Op-Ed declaring that We Really Are Winning in Iraq This Time — this one in the NYT from ‘liberal’ Brookings Institution ’scholars’ Ken Pollack and Mike O’Hanlon...

Foreclosures rise 58 percent in first half of ’07

The number of U.S. homes facing foreclosure surged 58 percent in the first six months of the year, the latest sign of mounting problems in the mortgage industry, a data firm said Monday. In all, 573,397 properties across the nation reported some sort of foreclosure activity in the first half of this year, including receiving notices of default, auction sale notices or being repossessed by lenders, Irvine-based RealtyTrac Inc. said...

An Unsolved Killing and the US Attorney Scandal

"Tom Wales was not supposed to be home on the night of October 11, 2001. Wales, an assistant United States attorney in Seattle, had planned to have dinner and spend the evening with his girlfriend, Marlis DeJongh, a court reporter who lived downtown. But that afternoon Wales called DeJongh and said that he had projects he needed to work on at home. In the evening, after leaving his office, near the federal courthouse, he returned to his Craftsman-style, wood-frame house in a quiet neighborhood known as Queen Anne," writes Jeffrey Toobin in next month's The New Yorker.

A Warning to Tony Blair

By Uri Avnery

Last week, James Wolfensohn gave a long interview to Haaretz. He poured out his heart and summed up, with amazing openness, his months as special envoy of the US, Russia, the EU and the UN (the "Quartet") in this country - the same job entrusted now to Tony Blair. The interview could have been entitled "A Warning to Tony". Among other revelations, he disclosed that he was practically fired by the clique of Neo-cons, whose ideological leader is Paul Wolfowitz.

Democracy For the Few

A Review By Stephen Lendman

Of the world's 100 largest economies, 51 are corporations, more US-based ones than from any other country. Noam Chomsky calls them "private tyrannies." - They're run by wealthy and powerful figures comprising, along with other elites, the top 1% of the nation's affluent. Today they own 40 - 50% of the country's wealth in the form of stocks, bonds, land, natural resources, business assets and other investments. In contrast, 90% of American families have little or no net worth after mortgage and other debt burdens are taken into account.

Subsidized Home Food Gardening Program

Lets get this happening in OUR cities!!

Bob Banner
Radical Solutions Inspiring Hope

From: Martin Greenhut

Subject: San Francisco Subsidized Home Food Gardening Program

VICTORY GARDENS 2007+ calls for a more active role for cities in shaping agricultural and food policy. It is a concept currently in development with the city of San Francisco that would provide a subsidized home gardening program for individuals and neighborhoods. This program offers tools, training & materials for urban dwellers to participate in a city-wide transformation of underutilized backyards- turning them into productive growing spaces. The project draws from the historical model of the 1940's American Victory Garden program to provide a basis for developing urban agriculture as a viable form of sustainable food practice in the city.

The program is a two year pilot project that supports the transition of backyard, front yard, window boxes, rooftops and unused land into food production areas. VG2007+ has the mission to create and support a citywide network of urban farmers by (1) growing, distributing and supporting starter kits for home gardeners, (2) educating through lessons, exhibitions and web sites and (3) starting and maintaining a city seed bank.

The program seeks the power to reinhabit some of the original Victory Garden space in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park and perform the duties of development, maintenance, and operation.

Salee, a 10-year old Iraqi girl, lost both legs in a U.S. missile strike

Please take the time to watch this very touching short video (link above) about Salee, a beautiful little ten-year old Iraqi girl who lost both legs in a U.S. missile strike on her house, as she was playing hopscotch outside. Her brother and her best friend were both blown to pieces in this same attack. She is now in Greenville, South Carolina for medical treatment. She was brought there by Cole Miller of NO MORE VICTIMS. Please support Cole and NO MORE VICTIMS by going to: //www.nomorevictims.org - Cole has partnered with Robert Greenwald of Brave New Films on this video.

Salee (Sally)

November 7, 2006 – Hasswa, Iraq: Salee, a ten-year-old girl, was playing outside her home with her brother, cousin and some friends. US jets circled overhead. Suddenly the jets fired three missiles, apparently at two passenger vehicles. One of the missiles hit Salee's home, killing her brother and blowing off both of Salee's legs.

No More Victims has arranged for Salee to receive surgical and prosthetics services in Greenville, South Carolina. This medical treatment is unavailable to her in Iraq.

Thanks to the generosity of Shriner’s Hospital and the hard work of community organizers Ann Cothran, Selena Franks, and a coalition of South Carolina groups, Salee will at last receive the medical care she so urgently needs.
