McClatchy Newspapers' Michael Doyle writes: "Agriculture Department scientists are mobilizing to fight the puzzling and potentially catastrophic collapse of the nation's honey bee colonies."

Iraq PM: Country Can Manage Without US

The Associated Press's Bushra Juhi writes: "Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said Saturday that the Iraqi army and police are capable of keeping security in the country when American troops leave 'any time they want,' though he acknowledged the forces need further weapons and training."

Senate Prepares for Its Effort to Force Troop Reductions in Iraq

Adam Graham-Silverman of the Congressional Quarterly writes: "The Senate marked time in its Iraq debate on Friday, laying the rhetorical groundwork for a showdown next week over its latest effort to force President Bush to begin withdrawing US troops."

Conyers Sets Deadline for Miers Subpoena Compliance

House Vote to Withdraw Adds to Pressure on Republicans

Ewan MacAskill of the Guardian UK reports in Saturday's editions that "the division between President George Bush and Congress over the Iraq war hardened yesterday as the House of Representatives again voted to withdraw most US combat troops from Iraq by April 1" with "Democrats planning a further series of votes in the House and the Senate over the next few weeks to try to tempt Republican dissidents."

Midwest Towns Sour on War as Their Tolls Mount

"While opposition to the war has been stronger and more visible on the East and West coasts, small towns in the heartland and the South have provided the Bush administration with some of its most steadfast backers," reports Peter Slevin of the Washington Post. "But that support has cracked amid the echoes of graveside bagpipes and 21-gun salutes, which have been heard with greater frequency in recent months in small Midwestern communities."

Kucinich Challenges Clinton, Edwards to One-on-One Presidential Debates

Take a look at Dennis Kucinich on HardBall today, talking about the “imperialist” candidates (Clinton & Edwards) and their move to scale down the number of candidates who can be allowed to take part in the debates. In my opinion, they are trying to avoid the “people’s candidates” from pointing out their shortcomings with health care, Iraq war, employments issues, etc. Kucinich won’t take no crap from them! This is how he also stands up to corporate interests, which is actually what he IS doing, since Hillary & Edwards are totally beholden to their corporate funders!

Here is a 3-minute clip of Dennis Kucinich at the NAACP Debate:

End of a Cheap-Food Era

Writing in The North Bay Nugget, Gwynne Dyer says that while the global middle class has had the benefit of lower food prices, three converging factors are driving food prices up with no relief in sight. Dyer says the reasons are an increasing population, biofuels and increased consumption of meat.

Biofuel mania ends days of cheap food

By Gwynne Dyer

The era of cheap food is over. The price of maize has doubled in a year, and wheat futures are at their highest in a decade. The food price index in India has risen 11 per cent in one year, and in Mexico in January there were riots after the price of corn flour - used in making the staple food of the poor, tortillas - went up fourfold.

Study Paints Dire Picture of Warmer Northeast

A group of scientists released a report yesterday saying that by the end of this century "100-year floods could hit New York City every 10 years, Long Island lobsters could disappear, and New York apples could be hard to come by if nothing is done to reduce greenhouse gas emissions," wrote Anthony DePalma for The New York Times.

Florida to Introduce Tough Greenhouse Gas Targets

Jim Loney reports for Reuters that Florida will impose strict air-pollution standards aimed at reducing greenhouse-gas emissions by 80 percent of 1990 levels by 2050.

Oversight Committee Objects to Withholding of Tillman Documents

The House Oversight Committee said today that Representative Henry Waxman, the committee chairman, and Representative Tom Davis, ranking minority member, sent a letter to the White House asking that withheld documents related to Army Cpl. Patrick Tillman's death be released. In addition, they announced that the committee will hold a hearing on August 1 to investigate what senior officials at the Defense Department knew about Corporal Tillman's death.

Libby Judge "Perplexed" by Clemency

The judge who sentenced former White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby to 30 months in jail made his first public comments on the case today, saying he was "perplexed" by Bush's act of clemency and defending the sentence, which he said followed established legal precedents, Richard B. Schmitt writes in The Los Angeles Times.

Republican Senators Call For New War Authorization

Jeff Zeleny reports in The New York Times that "two leading Republican senators said today that President Bush should seek a new war authorization and present a plan to Congress by October 16 outlining contingency plans in Iraq. Those plans, which would include reducing American forces, should begin by the end of the year."

Top Secret: We're Wiretapping You

It could be a scene from Kafka or Brazil. Imagine a government agency, in a bureaucratic foul-up, accidentally gives you a copy of a document marked "top secret." And it contains a log of some of your private phone calls.

Israel 'Approved' to Strike Iran

Israel's Minister of Strategic Affairs said he has received approval from the U.S. and Europe for an Israeli attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.

A Different 'Gut Feeling': Israel Attacking Iran

One of Israel's top officials says he's got the go-ahead from NATO's U.S. and European officials to attack Iran. Chertoff, aware of a longstanding, fierce debate in the White House over attacking Iran, admits a "gut feeling," saying it's about Al Qaeda but probably feeling queasier about what an attack on Iran would do to inflame terrorists.

The Media on 'Global Terror'

By William Bowles

Five centuries of colonialism and imperialism have left a legacy of a deeply ingrained racism which expresses itself at every level of society but which is most insidiously expressed by the state and its mouthpieces, the corporate and state-run media.

Strange Bedfellows

By Cindy Sheehan

There must be an underlying shady reason that Speaker Pelosi took impeachment off the table. Her office stated the other day that she will not put the issue back on the table because she is focused on "ending the war." The statement would be laughable if it weren't for the fact that she is using a neo-con strategy of saying the exact opposite of what is true.
