Abramoff Lobbying of White House Probed

The House Government Reform Committee has subpoenaed the former law firm of convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff for records of any contacts he or members of his lobbying team had with the Bush White House. Abramoff has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to bribe government officials. To date, most of those implicated in the wide-ranging criminal probe of his activities have been members of Congress and their aides.

New House Majority Leader Keeps Old Ties to Lobbyists

DNC's Voting Rights Institute Calls for "Manual Count" of all Ballots in Busby/Bilbray Election

In a harshly worded statement, the DNC's Voting Rights Institute has issued a statement condemning the administration of the recent US House race between Democrat Francine Busby and Republican Brian Bilbray, joining a growing national outcry in calling for "a swift and verifiable 'manual count' of all 150,000 ballots cast in California's 50th District's 'bellwether' June 6th special election."

Neighbours face new mast fight

ANGRY neighbours are gearing up to fight a phone-mast battle they thought was won three years ago.

A plan to put up a 15m mobile phone mast at Carrville, on the outskirts of Durham City, was thrown out in 2003 in the wake of protests from people living nearby.

But phone company Hutchinson 3G says it has been unable to find an alternative site and has again applied to site a mast on open ground near the junction of the A1(M) and A690, next to what is now one of the Durham's park and ride car parks.

People living on the nearby housing estate, which includes the streets of Carrsdale, Dene Drive and Fallsway, say they will fight the plan once more.

"They have already got a mast at Durham City football club," said a residents' spokeswoman. "So we don't see why they need one here.
"They are talking about screening, but the trees are deciduous so there won't be any cover in the winter.

"We still have concerns about the impact on health from mobile phones. The technology has not been around that long, so how can they say there is not a problem?"

Hutchinson 3G's corporate affairs manager, Michael Alexander, said other sites had proved unsuitable and the mast was needed because the company had received complaints from customers about lack of coverage.
Mr Alexander added: "According to the World Health Organisation, there is no convincing evidence that weak radio signals cause any harm to health.

http://www.buergerwelle.de/body_science.html

"We are taking about doing some planting around the equipment cabinets to reduce the visual impact, and we hope to arrange a meeting with residents to discuss their concerns."

The application will be considered by Durham City Council's planning committee on a date to be fixed.

IT'S TIME TO CLOSE THE USA'S TORTURE CENTER

ACTION PAGE: http://www.usalone.com/stacey/pnum403.php

The Bush Administration has finally admitted that the detainees at Guantanamo are covered by the Geneva Convention. Then in the same breath said that, of course, they were already being treated humanely and in accordance with the Geneva Convention. In point of fact, the express purpose of Guantanamo in their own words was to create the legal of equivalent of "outer space".

Well, I don't know know where it says in the Geneva Convention that you can "waterboard" someone into thinking you are going to drown them. I don't know where it says you can keep them living outside in all weather for months at time. I don't know where it says you can deny Red Cross visits. And I don't know where anything in America says that you can deny alleged criminals their attorneys!

As a Candidate, as an American, I'm fed up with an Administration that squeezes through non-existent legal loopholes to get what they want. In this case it's the ability to abuse and/or torture men and women who haven't been proven guilty of anything yet. In one case, one man's attorney hadn't been able to see him for three years.

The Supreme Court is beginning to take action to end the legal nightmares. Perhaps that is a beginning of a long legal process. But NOW is the time for the American people to DEMAND that we end the abuse and horrors of our torture center in Guantanamo!

We must live up to our American ideals or the terrorists truly have won. Write your letter below and fill it with your voice and your feelings. Our Congresspeople and Senators need to know that it is time to close GITMO!

ACTION PAGE: http://www.usalone.com/stacey/pnum403.php

This alert is brought to you through the activism of Stacey Tallitsh, running for the U.S. House in the 1st Congressional district, and one of the leading progressive voices in the state of Louisiana. Many of you have already submitted his action page calling for the troops in Iraq to start coming home now, a policy that is more surely correct with every passing state of emergency in Baghdad.

Stacey has already produced his first call to action radio spot, calling for an end of the obstinate occupation of Iraq, a military escapade which has brought nothing but death and destruction to both their country and our own. Thanks to your generosity, Stacey needs just a couple more donations to start running these radio spots on his local stations, to build the consensus to actually start bringing our brave troops home. You can hear the new spot on this page.

RADIO SPOT DONATIONS: http://www.usalone.com/stacey/donations.php

Nobody can predict how a particular race will turn out. But we know that the spots we ran on impeachment had tremendous secondary impact, as TWO other groups were inspired to run their own call to action ads on this issue as a result of the investment we made in this action. If you are able to do so, please make whatever donation you can to continue the stand we are taking on issue after issue.

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this message to everyone else you know.

Fresh fury at school blow

The woman set to head the governing body of a new school has told of the bitter disappointment felt by the community after the plan was scrapped.

Mother-of-two Julie Kelly, 44, of Shire Close, Whiteley, had been already appointed chairwoman of the temporary governing body for the new primary school planned for Whiteley.

But that plan has been dashed by a row between the education authority, Hampshire County Council, and the owner of the proposed site, Winchester City Council, which has refused to sell the land.

Mrs Kelly said: 'We're just very disappointed.

'We've been preparing and hoping the school was going to go ahead. We put committees together and a draft prospectus, a logo and even an advert for a headteacher and a whole group of very committed people working to get this up and running for the people of Whiteley. Instead, more and more children are on waiting lists who would have had somewhere to go within Whiteley.'

The News reported on Tuesday that Winchester City Council's cabinet had recommended refusing to sell the land despite previously agreeing to the deal in principle. The council said its Hampshire counterpart had not offered adequate recreation land to compensate for the loss of ground next to Meadowside Leisure Centre, where the school would have been built.

The recommendation is expected to be rubber-stamped by the full council on July 19.

The school is needed as there are not enough spaces at the town's existing school, which already has 45 children on the waiting list for next year.

Many families had been praying for the new 210-pupil school, which would mean they no longer had to drive their children to neighbouring schools up to five miles away.

Complaint about interference to video TV facilities from the 02 Airwave police communications system TETRA

Ofcom
Riverside House
2a Southwark Bridge Road
London
SE1 9HA

15th July 2006

Dear Sir/Madam,

RE: Complaint about interference to TV/video facilities

When I telephoned the appropriate department some 10 days to two weeks ago, I was informed that a complaints form would be put in the post that day.

To date I have not received it. Therefore please treat this letter as a complaint about interference to video facilities from the 02 Airwave police communications system TETRA.

In the past many people, including ourselves, were unable to watch our TVs due to direct interference to the picture and sound quality when TETRA was being used/tested.

The many people across the UK who are sensitive to TETRA – and there are some who are only mainly sensitive to TETRA – can “feel” the presence of TETRA in their homes when this occurs, so we know it is purely TETRA and not atmospheric pressure or some other feeble excuse.

These same sensitive people across the UK have noted at least 3 changes to TETRA since then, each affecting us differently and not pleasantly.

The most recent change has meant that when we video TV programs we like to view at a more convenient time, they have been unwatchable due to a distinct pulsing interference which blocks out most of the picture and sometimes affects the quality of the sound. The sequences have changes 3 times over several weeks, which suggests testing, but always part of it contains a one second on and one second off pulsing which is impossible to watch.

Since your department did not even have the decency to send out a complaint form, and because I know that no one in authority cares if we cannot watch TV when we wish, or record programs when we wish, I have now cancelled the TV licence.

In the future, when it is finally proved that this technology, and especially TETRA, does harm people and animal life, and interfers with people lives and health, I will ensure that Ofcom is named, alongside many others, as being obstructive in the search for the truth.

I will also help others to claim compensation for the absolute destruction of their lives and human rights, unless Ofcom addresses the interference problems TETRA causes, so that people can enjoy the material things they buy for pleasure/necessity.

Ofcom is supposedly there to serve the people, not to serve the purposes of big companies or the Government. The people elected the Government to manage the country in the best interests of the people.

I would also suggest that Ofcom ensures accurate registration of ALL masts, to include TETRA and those put up without planning permission, if it wants to avoid its present bad reputation with those in the majority – the people of the UK.

I will be writing to the BBC to explain why I have cancelled my TV Licence and I will include a copy of this letter.
