Hillary Clinton: 'CFR Tells Government What It Should Be Doing'

Secretary of State happy she doesn't have to travel as far to get her orders

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s opening remarks during her speech to the Council on Foreign Relations yesterday will have done little to dampen accusations that the elitist CFR pulls the strings of the U.S. government.

Parents mobilise against the mast

Camden News - by TOM FOOT

Published: 16 July 2009

HUNDREDS of objections have met plans to erect a huge mobile phone mast in historic Hampstead.

The telecommunications giant Orange has applied to erect a 22-foot reception-boosting pole outside a historic wall, which once protected an ancient orchard, in Fitzjohn’s Avenue near the junction of Lyndhurst Road.

A campaign has been launched with residents, councillors, parents and schools, arguing that the mast – taller than a fully grown giraffe – will destroy the charm of the conservation area and damage children’s health.

Holding Paulson accountable for this mess

Competitive Enterprise Institute
by John Berlau

07/16/09

As much as conservatives criticize President Obama, legitimately in my view, for federal meddling in business and dictating who should serve on the auto industry boards, we must never forget that it was Bush administration Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson who made the federal government go where it had never gone before in its dealings with private corporations. That is why the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee performed a valuable service in its hearing Thursday that got to the truth about Paulson’s threats to remove the CEO and board members of a private corporation if it didn’t do what Paulson arbitrarily deemed best for the ‘financial system’...

PTSD Ignored on Active Duty

Maya Schenwar, Truthout: "The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have thrown post-traumatic stress disorder into stark public light. As of the end of March, 346,393 US veterans were being treated for PTSD, and that number continues to grow rapidly. However, PTSD symptoms don't always wait to emerge until soldiers return home. For active-duty soldiers like Airman Steven Flowers, stationed in Aviano, Italy, it can take years to receive even minimal care. And once treatment begins, the soldiers are often punished for revealing their problems."

Obama’s new euphemism

CounterPunch
by Joanne Mariner

07/14/09

In a high-profile national security speech he gave in May, President Obama asserted that the military prison at Guantanamo held some number of terrorism suspects who could not be convicted of a crime, but who were nonetheless too dangerous to release. According to a report in the Washington Post on Saturday, the Obama administration has now drafted an executive order that would allow such prisoners to be held indefinitely without charge. To disguise its plans for relying on a practice that is more characteristic of repressive governments than of constitutional democracies, the Obama administration has even invented its own euphemism. In his May speech, President Obama spoke only of ‘prolonged’ detention, not of indefinite detention, or preventive detention, or detention without charge...

Military developing half-robot, half-insect “cybug” spies

Fox News

Researchers are now experimenting with developing insect cyborgs or ‘cybugs’ that could work as spies. Miniature robots could be good spies, but researchers now are experimenting with insect cyborgs or ‘cybugs’ that could work even better. Scientists can already control the flight of real moths using implanted devices. … Developing such robots has proven a challenge so far, with one major hurdle being inventing an energy source for the droids that is both low weight and high power. Still, evidence that such machines are possible is ample in nature in the form of insects, which convert biological energy into flight...

The surveillance state threatens all of us

Campaign For Liberty
by Philip Giraldi

07/16/09

When you hear the word ’security’ or ’safety’ watch out. They are the two buzz words that are most often used by the government, whether federal or local, to fearmonger. Fear can be used to drive bad policies that otherwise would be rejected. It has consequences, internationally, nationally, and locally. Around the world Americans fight wars because they are afraid that if they do not do so they will be attacked by terrorists. Nationally, the Department of Homeland Security grows and grows, compiling extensive data bases on citizens who have done no wrong...

US foreclosures hit record 1.5 million in first half of 2009

Bloomberg

07/16/09

U.S. foreclosure filings hit a record in the first half, a sign that job losses and falling property prices deepened the housing recession, according to RealtyTrac Inc. More than 1.5 million properties received a default or auction notice or were seized by banks in the six months through June, the Irvine, California-based seller of default data said today in a statement. That’s a 15 percent increase from the year earlier. One in 84 U.S. households received a filing...

How Bad Will the Economy Get?

How Bad Will the Economy Get?

Really, Really Bad

Historically, every financial and economic crisis has been used to further centralize power and concentrate wealth. This one is no different, and in fact the moves being promoted by the Obama administration and the central banks of the Western powers will take the whole world to the pinnacle of financial despotism -- unless enough people wake up and claim their own "money power."

The most important questions to ask about the CIA’s targeted killing program

Slate
by Shane Harris

07/15/09

What have we learned this week about the once-secret CIA plan to target and kill members of al-Qaida? It stemmed from George Bush’s secret order in 2001 that allowed the CIA to capture and, if necessary, take out members of the terrorist network. The plan reportedly focused on killing terrorists at close range rather than blowing them up with remote-guided bombs. And former Vice President Dick Cheney told the CIA not to inform Congress about the program. What don’t we know? Much more. As the probing continues into what, precisely, this program was all about, here’s a list of the most important outstanding questions. The answers will determine whether this episode fades or turns into the first full-blown intelligence fiasco of the young Obama administration...

The back door way to ignore the Bill of Rights

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G. Hornberger

07/15/09

Among the most shocking aspects of Barack Obama’s presidency so far has been his embrace of the power that George W. Bush assumed to incarcerate people suspected of terrorism for the rest of their lives, without a jury trial to determine whether they are in fact guilty of the offense. There is absolutely no reason why Obama and any future president cannot expand that power to other federal criminal offenses, including drug crimes and gun crimes...
