Mandatory vaccination on the horizon

The swine flu hysteria seems to have died down, at least as far as the news media is concerned.

But the government-pharmaceutical industry machine grinds on.

Terror threats and pandemics are being given the same weight legally and the government has granted itself new powers to deal with them.

An important message for all thinking people from the National Vaccine Information Center.

Running On Empty

By Mike Whitney

Consumer spending is 70% of GDP, but consumers have suddenly stepped on the brakes. This is a real game-changer. Even if the credit markets are restored and the banks show a greater willingness to lend; there will be no return to the pre-crisis consumption-levels of the past. Those days are over.

The next segment of the market to crash will be the mid- to high-end, where many smug homeowners are now telling themselves they'll just rent their houses for a year while they wait for the market to "come back." Needless to say, Mark thinks these folks are dreaming.

Another Example of U.S. Censorship of Mainstream Media

It appears that the U.S. Mainstream media is going to ignore this story even though Cynthia McKinney was once a Congresswoman from Georgia and a Presidential candidate. How odd. What does this say about the news we receive daily from the mainstream media.

Damn those ungrateful Pakistanis. After U.S. drone attacks killed more than 600 of their people since 2006-most of them civilians-it seems they think they have some right to say they don't want the U.S. flying its "aid" planes to Swat and other "tribal areas.

Goldman Sachs Posts Record Profits

Matt Taibbi Probes Role of Investment Giant in US Financial Meltdown

By Democracy Now - Audio and Transcript

Goldman Sachs, the nation's most powerful financial company, has reported the richest quarterly profit in its 140-year history: $3.44 billion between April and June. We speak to Matt Taibbi, whose new Rolling Stone article argues that "Goldman Sachs has engineered every major market manipulation since the Great Depression."

The Joy of Sachs

By Paul Krugman

The American economy remains in dire straits, with one worker in six unemployed or underemployed. Yet Goldman Sachs just reported record quarterly profits - and it's preparing to hand out huge bonuses, comparable to what it was paying before the crisis. What does this contrast tell us?

//informationclearinghouse.info/article23082.htm

--------

Goldman's Back, and Why We Should Be Worried

Robert Reich, Robert Reich's Blog: "Should we breath a sigh of relief that Goldman Sachs has posted record earnings as revenue from trading and stock underwriting reached all-time highs (second quarter net income was $3.44 billion) -- less than a year after the firm took $10 billion directly from taxpayers and $13 billion indirectly through AIG? In some ways, yes.... But in another respect, Goldman's resurgence should send shivers down the backs of every hardworking American who has lost a large chunk of retirement savings in this economic debacle, as well as the millions who have lost their jobs."

//www.truthout.org/071509F?n

"Government Sachs" Strikes Gold ... Again

Robert Scheer, Truthdig: "Connect the dots: Goldman Sachs made $3.44 billion in profit this past quarter, while the U.S deficit topped $1 trillion for the first time in the nation's history and appeared to be headed toward doubling that figure before the budget year is out. Since most of the increase in the federal deficit is due to bailing out the banks and salvaging the greater economy they helped destroy, why is the top investment bank doing so well?"

New ethics complaint filed against Palin

Worcester Telegram & Gazette

07/14/09

Outgoing Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is facing yet another ethics complaint — the 18th against her and the very thing that helped to prompt her resignation. The latest complaint alleges she abused her office by accepting a salary and using state staff while campaigning outside Alaska for the vice presidency. It’s the third complaint filed against the Republican since she announced July 3 that she was stepping down...

Report: Palin’s trust fund could violate ethics act

ABC News

07/21/09

An independent investigator has found evidence that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin may have violated ethics laws by accepting private donations to pay her legal debts. It’s the latest legal distraction for the former vice presidential candidate as she prepares to leave office this weekend, and one thick with irony — the same vehicle Palin is using to fight ethics charges is now being called a potential ethics violation itself...

The New Republic
by Suzy Khimm

07/24/09

When Sarah Palin abruptly announced that she was planning to leave office, it was clear whom she blamed for her early exit. ‘I wish you’d hear MORE from the media of your state’s progress and how we tackle Outside interests — daily — SPECIAL interests that would stymie our state,’ she said in her July 3 resignation speech, which she later posted on her website. Blasting her adversaries for paralyzing the Alaska governor’s office with charges of ‘frivolous ethics violations,’ Palin and her representatives accused these unnamed ‘Outside interests’ of harming her ability to govern after returning from the presidential campaign. … There’s no doubt that Alaska’s state government has been paralyzed since Palin’s return, with anger and frustration emanating from both the governor’s office and the state legislature. All of Palin’s major bills failed to pass this year’s first 90-day session. But conversations with both Republican and Democratic legislators reveal that Palin’s inability to get anything done has little to do with the media attacks the Alaska governor claims drove her from office...
