Government money is a toxic asset

Real Clear Politics
by David Ignatius

05/17/09

Remember those ‘toxic assets’ that were clogging the financial system a few months ago? Well, despite all the billions in government bailout programs, they’re mostly still there. And in trying to clean up the system, the Obama administration has actually created a new category of toxic assets that banks desperately want to get off their books — namely the U.S. Treasury’s forced infusions of capital...

Pain at Guantanamo and paralysis in government

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Andy Worthington

05/18/09

Although I reported last week about an important court case in favor of Alla Ali Bin Ali Ahmed, a Yemeni prisoner in Guantanamo, there was little in the way of progress, during the first 115 days of the Obama administration, for the men who are still held, despite the president’s pledge to close the prison within a year. Just one prisoner, Binyam Mohamed, had been released, out of the 241 prisoners still in Guantanamo, but that, it was clear, was simply because his well-chronicled torture in Morocco and Afghanistan had become a persistent irritant to both the British and American governments in courtrooms on both sides of the Atlantic...

Auto bailout blues: Spin, lies and layoffs

The Nation
by John Nichols

05/16/09

The madness of the approach adopted by the Johnson and Nixon administrations to war in Vietnam was summed up by the American major who said after the destruction of the Vietnamese village of Ben Tre: ‘It became necessary to destroy the village in order to save it.’ The madness of the approach adopted by the Bush and Obama administrations to the renewal of the American auto industry has been summed up by the Treasury Department’s latest statement on the ‘restructurings’ of the Chrysler and General Motors automotive companies. … It may be true that the tens of billions in federal tax dollars that are being pumped into Chrysler and General Motors will save the names of these companies. But the auto-industry ‘restructuring’ is not saving auto plants that have been targeted for closing, tens of thousands of auto workers who face layoffs, auto dealers who are being ‘consolidated’ out of business and perhaps 100,000 service and repair employees who are soon to be jobless...

After Bernanke has destroyed the dollar, will the Renminbi be the next world reserve currency?

By Nouriel Roubini

Traditionally, empires that hold the global reserve currency are also net foreign creditors and net lenders. The British Empire declined - and the pound lost its status as the main global reserve currency - when Britain became a net debtor and a net borrower in World War II. Today, the United States is in a similar position.

Buyers Remorse: Is It Too Late To Swap Obama?

By Mike Whitney

I don't know about you, but I believe that America is based on the idea that every man has certain basic rights, and the most fundamental of all those rights is the right to know why the state has thrown your a... in jail. That's numero uno! It's called habeas corpus and the whole judicial system rests on that one foundation stone. People like Obama, who don't believe in habeas, shouldn't even call themselves "American" in my book because they don't believe in the underlying principles.
