Blame Rising Oil Prices on Bush

Turning the Bush Page

Le Monde's editorialist writes, "Seven years ago, Europeans discovered the new American president, George W. Bush, during a summit organized in Goteborg, Sweden, and marked by anti-globalization demonstrations. Rejecting the Kyoto protocol on global warming, reappraising United States's participation in peacekeeping missions in different parts of the world, preparing to denounce the nuclear arms control treaties inherited from the 1970s, the new team in power in Washington roused anxiety in Europe."

Senators Demand More Answers on Torture Policies

J. Taylor Rushing, of The Hill: "Unsatisfied Democratic and Republican senators on Tuesday pressed the Bush administration for more answers on its torture policies. Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee criticized a report from the Department of Justice as vague and incomplete. Panel members said the document by Justice Department Inspector General Glenn Fine and testimony by FBI General Counsel Valerie Caproni did nothing to resolve concerns that US interrogators could still be allowed to torture terror suspects."

Ron Paul to Host Parallel GOP Convention

Sarah Wheaton, of The New York Times: "Representative Ron Paul, the Republican presidential candidate, will be the main attraction at the Twin Cities confab. No, not the Republican National Convention fewer than eight miles away at the XCel Center, but at his own party, to be held on the second day of the event that will seal Senator John McCain as the GOP nominee. 'This isn't a protest,' said Jesse Benton, the libertarian-leaning Republican's spokesman. 'This is a celebration of limited government and Republican principles.'"

How they think about us

One Man's Online Journey Through Bush's Alphabet Soup

Tom Engelhardt, of TomDispatch: "In these last years, the Bush administration's unbounded sense of imperial impunity, and an older American belief that this country possesses a moral code exceptional among nations, have proven a lethal geopolitical cocktail. This curious perspective has led our administration to commit acts of horror in our name, while absolving us from thinking about how others might look on those acts -- and by extension, how they think about us."

Iraqi Parliament's Push for Sovereignty

Maya Schenwar, of Truthout: "Last week, for the first time, two Iraqi members of Parliament (MPs) testified before the House Foreign Affairs Committee. They spoke bluntly. 'The anarchy and chaos in Iraq is linked to the presence of the occupation, not withdrawal from Iraq,' Nadeem Al-Jaberi, an MP and co-founder of the Al-Fadhila party, testified. Under questioning by Republican Congress members, Al-Jaberi repeatedly renounced the 'success of the surge,' and added, 'What we strive for is establishing a balanced relationship between the two countries. But nothing of this could be made possible until the troops withdraw from Iraq.'"

Talks, not war with Iran

Members of Congress including Ron Paul say there must be talks with Iran.

With gasoline prices headed toward $5 a gallon, more than half the population become marooned in the suburbs

Oil change

The Nation
by Nicholas von Hoffman

With gasoline prices headed toward $5 a gallon, more than half the population has, in a matter of a year, become marooned in the suburbs. The economics of housing combined with the lunacies of city planning have left most Americans stranded, miles away from their places of work, their schools, their stores and medical facilities. The physical plant of the United States for the past sixty years was designed on a premise of cheap energy. This has left much of our population locked into homes and communities they now can ill afford to leave in the morning, come back to at night, heat in the winter or cool in summer. Nor they can sell out and go elsewhere...

Subsidies: a big culprit in high gas prices

Christian Science Monitor
by staff

In China, the government caps gas prices. Drivers there pay about half of what Americans pay. In many countries, oil prices are held artificially low, either by fiat or subsidy. The result? Consumption keeps rising, boosting global prices. The rest of the world — the part now racing to conserve — ends up paying more than it should. Unfair? Yes, say global actors such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which is calling on governments to let consumers face market prices in order to kick-start conservation and reduce official spending...

Why is America in the same energy predicament it was in the 1970s?

Hawaii Reporter
by Richard Olivastro

With gasoline prices rising every day, Americans are reeling at the pump; as their hard earned dollars are reeled out of their pockets by the newest one-armed bandit: the gas pump. Yes, many feel the ever increasing gas prices are a ‘crime’ of sorts, but more important is the realization that what is happening is not a ‘victimless’ crime. And, however reluctantly, almost everyone necessarily returns to the ‘scene of the crime’ yet again and again...

Senate Republicans block windfall taxes on Big Oil

Pensacola News Journal

Saved by Senate Republicans, big oil companies dodged an attempt Tuesday to slap them with a windfall profits tax and take away billions of dollars in tax breaks in response to the record gasoline prices that have the nation fuming. GOP senators shoved aside the Democratic proposal, arguing that punishing Big Oil won’t do a thing to lower the $4-a-gallon-price of gasoline that is sending economic waves across the country. High prices at the pump are threatening everything from summer vacations to Meals on Wheels deliveries to the elderly...

Anti-War Protesters Banned From Demonstrating Against Bush

Anti-war protesters banned from demonstrating against Bush

London police have announced a ban on anti-war campaigners hoping to protest against President George Bush's visit to Downing Street this Sunday. The Whitehall ban has been immediately condemned as a "totalitarian act" by the playwright Harold Pinter, while Stop the War organisers are urging people to defy it and to demonstrate nearby in Parliament Square.

Iraq Nears Title as World's Most Corrupt

By Joel Brinkley

During the five years the United States has occupied Iraq, the Bush administration has created a new state with a number of notable features: A venal, dysfunctional government. A terrorist haven and training ground. A nation so violent and dangerous that 10 percent of the population has fled.

Purple Hearts for Psychic Scars?

Writing for Time Magazine, Mark Thompson says: "For every soldier killed or physically wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan, some 10 others come home psychically scarred. The Pentagon has diagnosed roughly 40,000 troops with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) since 2003, and tens of thousands of others are dealing with it on their own or ultimately will be diagnosed. With the war taking such a heavy psychological toll, some inside the military are starting to ask if men and women who become mentally injured in the service of their country deserve the Purple Heart."

Prices Leap for Corn and Crude Oil

Keith Good,, writes: "The New York Times editorial board stated in today’s paper that, 'Over the past year, the prices of grains and vegetable oils have nearly doubled. Rice has jumped by about half. The causes include soaring energy costs, drought in big agricultural producers, like Australia, and rising demand by a burgeoning middle class in China and India. But misguided mandates and subsidies in the United States and Europe to produce energy from crops are also playing an important role.'"

Abschied durch die Hintertür: „Good bye, Mr. President"

11. Juni 2008

Americans are possessed with ennui and malaise, and worst of all, fears. Perhaps these conditions explain the rash of suicides, the campus murders, the weariness, the failure to act on others’ behalf, the inertia and apathy, and the near lack of humanism.
