Abu Ghraib Inmates Sue Contractors, Claim Torture

David Dishneau, of The Associated Press: "Three Iraqis and a Jordanian filed federal lawsuits Monday alleging they were tortured by US defense contractors while detained at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq in 2003 and 2004. The lawsuits allege that those arrested and taken to the prison were subjected to forced nudity, electrical shocks, mock executions and other inhumane treatment. They seek unspecified payments high enough to compensate the detainees for their injuries, and to deter contractors from such conduct in the future."

A Blind Eye on Soldiers' Suicides

Lives Lost at Home

Kevin Graman reports for the Spokesman Review: "A distraught 26-year-old Navy veteran who had a history of mental illness hanged himself within three hours of seeking help at Spokane Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The July 7 death of Lucas Senescall was the sixth suicide this year of a veteran who had contact with the Spokane VA, a marked increase in such deaths. Last year, there were two suicides among veterans treated at the local VA. Senescall's death comes amid heightened concern nationwide over the suicide rate among veterans."

US Military Keeping Secrets About Female Soldiers' "Suicides"?

Ann Wright, Truthdig: "Since I posted on April 28 the article 'Is There an Army Cover Up of the Rape and Murder of Women Soldiers?,' the deaths of two more US Army women in Iraq and Afghanistan have been listed as suicides - the September 28, 2007, death of 30-year-old Spc. Ciara Durkin and the February 22, 2008, death of 25-year-old Spc. Keisha Morgan. Both 'suicides' are disputed by the families of the women."

Suicide hot line got calls from 22,000 veterans

More than 22,000 veterans have sought help from a special suicide hot line in its first year, and 1,221 suicides have been averted, the government says.

Iraq Fails to Sign Contracts With Global Oil Majors

Iraqi notice on oil fields does not include contracts

The potential participation of big Western companies like BP, Chevron, Exxon Mobil, Shell and Total SA in Iraq's oil industry has been criticized in recent weeks following published reports that several were close to signing no-bid contracts with the Iraqi government.

Iraqi oil contracts: the spoils of war?

If Iraq's oil belongs to the Iraqis, why are western companies being awarded contracts?

U.S. Helped Western Companies Divvy Up Iraqi Oil

A group of American advisers led by a small State Department team played an integral part in drawing up contracts between the Iraqi government and five major Western oil companies to develop some of the largest fields in Iraq, American officials say.

Lyndsey Layton, of The Washington Post: "The Defense Department, the nation's biggest polluter, is resisting orders from the Environmental Protection Agency to clean up Fort Meade and two other military bases where the EPA says dumped chemicals pose 'imminent and substantial' dangers to public health and the environment. The Pentagon has also declined to sign agreements required by law that cover 12 other military sites on the Superfund list of the most polluted places in the country."

US Advised Iraqi Ministry on Oil Deals

Andrew E. Kramer, of The New York Times: "A group of American advisers led by a small State Department team played an integral part in drawing up contracts between the Iraqi government and five major Western oil companies to develop some of the largest fields in Iraq, American officials say. The disclosure, coming on the eve of the contracts' announcement, is the first confirmation of direct involvement by the Bush administration in deals to open Iraq's oil to commercial development and is likely to stoke criticism."

Don’t wait for World War III

by Justin Raimondo

The window of opportunity for the neocons to launch an attack will stay open only as long as this president is in the White House, and the Israelis know it. That’s why their propaganda campaign has recently been ratcheted up to new heights of hysteria, and why they’re pulling in all their chits in Congress. The clock is ticking, and the Lobby is moving fast. Will — can — the antiwar movement move with equal speed? What is needed, first of all, is a decisive defeat for the Lobby on the issue of Senate Resolution 580 (in the House, Congressional Resolution 362). A new war in the Middle East — or anywhere else — is the last thing the majority of Americans want, yet a fanatical and well-positioned minority will prevail if we don’t act now...

The Prospects for a Second American Revolution

Hope is not the answer

Intellectual Conservative
by Steven D. Laib

For the last several months I’ve been totally befuddled by the constant repetition of the ‘hope and change’ mantra that has become the Obama slogan. The words by themselves really signify nothing. What does ‘hope’ stand for? Expectations of a better future perhaps? Experience has taught me that hope is vastly overrated in such a setting. If we want it, then we should go out and make it, rather than waiting around for a glib demagogue selling political snake oil. After all, how can any ‘leader’ know what is best for each and every one of us? The American Revolution came about not because of hope, but because of how people made it happen. They were willing to fight and die to bring liberty to the land they lived in...
