ACLU: House Approves Unconstitutional Surveillance Legislation

House passes new surveillance law

The House Friday easily approved a compromise bill setting new electronic surveillance rules that effectively shield telecommunications companies from lawsuits arising from the government's terrorism-era warrantless eavesdropping on phone and computer lines in this country.

Democrats Legalize Bush's Crimes

Writing for Consortium News, Robert Parry says, "House Speaker Nancy Pelosi claims that a key positive feature of the new wiretap 'compromise' is that the bill reaffirms that the President must follow the law, even though the same bill virtually assures that no one will be held accountable for George W. Health Care and Ghosts of War

For Truthout, Norman Solomon writes: "Speaking in a time of war, Martin Luther King Jr. said: 'Somehow this madness must cease.' Forty-one years later, young soldiers are returning to the United States from terrifying zones of carnage. The old claims of a justified war have melted away. So have the promises of a humane society back home. Statistics about the war dead tell us very little about human realities. And familiar downbeat numbers about health care - 47 million Americans with no health insurance, perhaps an equal number woefully underinsured - tell us very little about the actual consequences or other options."

Umstrittenes BKA-Gesetz: Das Geheimnisamt

The welfare-warfare state

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

06/20/08

The Democrats have struck a deal with the White House, essentially giving Bush everything he wanted in terms of more money for his war, and more authority to conduct it as he sees fit, in return for increased social welfare spending. The libertarian social theorist Murray N. Rothbard coined a very useful term to describe what is happening, in this instance: he dubbed modern America a ‘Welfare-Warfare State,’ and surely this Democratic deal with the Devil shows how it works in practice. The Democrats used the war to seize control of Congress, and have ever since voted to fully fund — indeed, over-fund — U.S. military operations in Iraq and throughout the region. Whether this prefigures how President Obama will deal with the issue — well, you’ve been warned...

You would think that having decided to permit torture, in the face of all these legal, moral, and practical objections, those members of the Bush administration who did so could assemble a coherent defense: We tortured because it works; we tortured because nothing else worked better. We tortured because after careful consideration, it was worth the moral price we paid. But as Congress begins the painful process of tracing the origins of the government’s abusive interrogation program, its members are now confronted by the last refuge of torturers everywhere: We tortured with the very best of intentions...
