Ramadan Giving Presents Dilemma for American Muslims

William Fisher writes for Truthout, "As the mid-September Ramadan fast approaches, many American Muslims are in a quandary about how to fulfill their Quranic obligation to contribute to charity - since the US government has closed down and frozen the assets of many of the leading philanthropies that have traditionally championed Muslim causes, for providing 'material support' to terrorist organizations."

Wednesday, Sep 5 may be the last day you can act before the House vote on "The Voter Confidence and Increased Accessibility Act" (HR811). If you have not already, please find just a few minutes to send a fax or email your Representative.

HR811 will ensure that the voters determine who controls Congress and the Presidency in 2009. Do not have to tell your children someday that democracy ended and that you did nothing. A few minutes of your time is all that is needed now to protect our futures at this critical juncture in history.

SOME ORGANIZATIONS SUPPORTING HR811

Among the election reform groups supporting HR811 along with The National Election Data Archive are Verified Voting, VoteTrustUSA, Vote PA, The Electronic Frontier Foundation, The Brennan Center, People for the American Way, NC Coalition for Verified Voting, Sarasota Alliance for Fair Elections (SAFE), Common Cause, Concerned Voters of Centre County (PA), Save Our Votes (MD), Citizens for Election Integrity
(MN), Iowans for Voting Integrity, and Voting Matters/Oregon.

OTHER INFORMATION

Verified Voting's comments on HR811:

"The most basic elements of the bill remain intact – 2008 requirements for paper ballots as an independent means of verifying electronic vote tabulation, random mandatory audits, disclosure of voting system software, tighter security of electronic voting systems, emergency paper ballots in case of machine failures, provision of funding to enable jurisdictions to upgrade to accessibly verifiable paper-based voting systems, and the establishment of an arm's length between voting machine vendors and testing laboratories. These reforms are important, and must be enacted as soon as possible. Therefore VerifiedVoting.org continues to support H.R. 811."

An article on HR811 by the Electronic Frontier Foundation "Crunch Time for E-Voting Reform" http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/archives/005421.php

You may remind your US Representative that there is plenty of time, as well as funding, for states with paperless electronic ballot voting machines to replace them before the 2008 November election and conduct manual audits.

HERE IS A SAMPLE LETTER YOU COULD COPY AND PASTE TO A WORD PROCESSOR AND THEN FAX TO YOUR REPRESENTATIVE:

Dear Representative -----------

Please vote "Yes" on House Resolution 811 and vote "No" on the "unfunded mandate" amendment to it that would gut the requirement for paper ballots and manual election audits in 2008. Here is an easy-to-read, understandable analysis of HR811's provisions: http://electionarchive.org/ucvAnalysis/US/Analysis-HR811-Aug2007.pdf

It is time for all 50 States to have verifiably honest accurate elections - and taxpayers deserve more economical voting systems.

Many states have no paper ballots, and even more have no audits of their elections - never comparing voter verifiable paper records with the unofficial vote counts; and many use inaccurate voting systems which have been decertified or scrapped states such as CA, MD, FL,...; leaving them with no way to judge the integrity of their vote counts and electoral process.

The United States needs "The Voter Confidence & Increased Accessibility Act" (H.R. 811).

Together with the $300 Million authorized by the House, States have $1.6+ Billion available in remaining HAVA funding and can afford to meet the 2008 deadlines. See how much money your state has left of HAVA funding on pp. 8 and 9 in the US Election Assistance report http://www.eac.gov/docs/Congressional%20Report%20Public%20Release%20Final.pdf

There is plenty of time for states with paperless electronic voting systems to replace them with auditable voting equipment. See how long it takes States to replace voting systems in Verified Voting's "How Long Does it Take to Change a Voting System?" http://electionmathematics.org/em-voting-systems/VotingSystemChange.pdf

PLEASE DONATE - WE NEED FUNDS URGENTLY

There is a huge amount of work to be done yet to finish deriving and explaining the mathematics and procedures for conducting valid election audits. NEDA did not get funded by PEW to finish its work in this area, so we need your help. Please donate to the National Election Data Archive. We urgently need to raise sufficient funds to hire an additional staff person to keep up with the growing work-load. NEDA could accomplish a lot more if there were sufficient donations to pay just one person's salary. Fifty Years Later, Lamenting State of Civil Rights Division

Greg Gordon reports for McClatchy Newspapers: "Several ... former civil rights lawyers expressed fears that the Bush administration has tainted the division's legacy by rolling back voting rights enforcement, bringing few employment discrimination lawsuits on behalf of African-Americans and diverting appellate lawyers to immigration cases. The Senate Judiciary Committee will conduct a hearing Wednesday to observe the 50th anniversary and hear concerns from civil rights leaders that the division has become partisan, allegedly trampling on minorities' rights rather than protecting them."

Mercury toxicity presenting as chronic fatigue, memory impairment and depression:diagnosis, treatment, susceptibility, and outcomes in a New Zealand general practice setting (1994-2006).

Wojcik DP, Godfrey ME, Christie D, Haley BE.Northland Environmental Health Clinic, 2 Dip Rd, Kamo, Whangarei, Northland, New Zealand. wojcik @wave.co.nz

In a group of 465 patients diagnosed as having chronic mercury toxicity (CMT), 32.3% had severe fatigue, 88.8% had memory loss, and 27.5% had depression. A significant correlation was found between CMT and the Apo-lipoprotein E4 genotype (p=0.001). An investigation into an additional 864 consecutively seen general practice patients, resulted in 30.3% having evidence consistent with CMT, and once again a significant correlation was found with the APO-E4 genotype (p=0.001). Removal of amalgam mercury fillings when combined with appropriate treatment resulted in a significant symptom reduction (p<0.001) to levels reported by healthy subjects.

Tiny devices, tiny minds and the new enslavement

For the first time in history it will be possible to observe any individual, cradle to grave — and even, via genetics, beyond the grave and before the womb — and file the results. … The slaves of old enjoyed transient hours of precious freedom when they were out of the scrutiny of their overseers — locked in the barracoons at night or when unsupervised about the house or farm, perhaps. Not so the citizen of the modern democratic state. She or he will potentially be under surveillance, one way or another, 24/7, 7/52 and 52/100. It will be a system beyond the most megalomaniac dreams of the KGB Registry. And it will be here within a generation...

Advisers tell Bush to stand pat on Iraq

Morganton News Herald

09/05/07

President Bush’s senior advisers on Iraq have recommended he stand by his current war strategy, and he is unlikely to order more than a symbolic cut in troops before the end of the year, administration officials told The Associated Press on Tuesday. The recommendations from the military commander in Iraq, Gen. David Petraeus, and U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker come despite independent government findings Tuesday that Baghdad has not met most of the political, military and economic markers set by Congress...

Dick Cheney's top aide: "We're one bomb away" from our goal

While our national media was glorifying the Great Commander-in-Chief and actively disseminating their most manipulative claims and mocking Democrats on the pettiest of grounds, the Bush administration was dismantling the rule of law, systematically violating long-standing statutes and treaties at will.

Iran: Consequences of a War

This briefing paper, written by our Global Security Consultant, Professor Paul Rogers, provides a comprehensive analysis of the likely nature of US or Israeli military action that would be intended to disable Iran's nuclear capabilities. It outlines both the immediate consequences in terms of loss of human life, facilities and infrastructure, and also the likely Iranian responses, which would be extensive.

Iraq's war of the warlords

The desolating reality is that Iraq has devolved into a collection of separate cities and regions ruled by sectarian or criminal militias - and the warlords who command the men with guns -- Iraq has been sundered into separate fiefdoms and has descended into Somalia-style warlordism, there is no identifiable enemy over whom President Bush may claim victory. There are now many different wars in Iraq, but none that America can win.

Hurricane Katrina and War-What Is the Connection?

By Ismael Hossein-zadeh

On the face of it, there is no connection between Katrina's tragic devastation of New Orleans and the recent U.S. wars of choice. It can be shown, however, that the death and destruction wrought by Katrina have been (at least in part) a submerged or invisible part of the enormous costs of the escalating war and military spending.

Is George Bush Restarting Latin America's 'Dirty Wars'?

In May of 2005, the Paraguayan Senate voted to allow U.S. troops to operate in Paraguay with total immunity. Washington had threatened to cut off millions in aid to the country if Paraguay did not grant the U.S. troops entry. War and the "New World Order"

By Mahdi Darius Nazemroaya

War is the ultimate means of attempting to change societies and reshape nations. It is through war that national economies and political structures can be forcibly restructured. War is, potentially, the ultimate economic shock therapy. The wars in the Middle East are stepping stones towards establishing a vision of global order that has been in the hearts and minds of the Anglo-American establishment for years. That vision is global ascendancy.

Iran's Nuclear Chess Game

The mainstream media in reporting this intricate 'chess game' has decided to champion the side of war and has given the truth a 'check mate'. Even 'reputable' papers such as The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Washington Post have all decided that serving a departing administration that has led the nation into one quagmire is of greater importance than loyalty to a nation consistent in its devotion to the flag.
