Analysis: Repeating history?
Just as President Bush has recalled his top general to defend the war in Iraq from growing political criticism, so, 40 years earlier, President Johnson brought General William Westmoreland back to Washington to give his assessment of the conflict in South East Asia. In an address to the joint houses of Congress in 1967, General Westmoreland said that US forces would win and that there was "light at the end of the tunnel".
