David Dishneau, of The Associated Press: "Three Iraqis and a Jordanian filed federal lawsuits Monday alleging they were tortured by US defense contractors while detained at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq in 2003 and 2004. The lawsuits allege that those arrested and taken to the prison were subjected to forced nudity, electrical shocks, mock executions and other inhumane treatment. They seek unspecified payments high enough to compensate the detainees for their injuries, and to deter contractors from such conduct in the future."

Kevin Graman reports for the Spokesman Review: "A distraught 26-year-old Navy veteran who had a history of mental illness hanged himself within three hours of seeking help at Spokane Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The July 7 death of Lucas Senescall was the sixth suicide this year of a veteran who had contact with the Spokane VA, a marked increase in such deaths. Last year, there were two suicides among veterans treated at the local VA. Senescall's death comes amid heightened concern nationwide over the suicide rate among veterans."

Protests have been made about a new Tetra mast planned for Bognor Regis. Telecom firm Airwave wants to put the controversial equipment on an existing mobile phone mast at Bognor FC's ground.

It intends to use the existing Vodafone equipment at the Nyewood Lane site for two panels for Tetra transmissions to the emergency services. These panels would be sited 8m above the ground. Two Airwave cabinets would also be installed on the ground.

Bognor Regis Town Council's planning and licensing committee has objected to the plans.

For the last several months I’ve been totally befuddled by the constant repetition of the ‘hope and change’ mantra that has become the Obama slogan. The words by themselves really signify nothing. What does ‘hope’ stand for? Expectations of a better future perhaps? Experience has taught me that hope is vastly overrated in such a setting. If we want it, then we should go out and make it, rather than waiting around for a glib demagogue selling political snake oil. After all, how can any ‘leader’ know what is best for each and every one of us? The American Revolution came about not because of hope, but because of how people made it happen. They were willing to fight and die to bring liberty to the land they lived in...
