Globalization And Democracy: Some Basics

By Michael Parenti

Free trade is not fair trade; it benefits strong nations at the expense of weaker ones, and rich interests at the expense of the rest of us. Globalization means turning the clock back on many twentieth-century reforms: no freedom to boycott products, no prohibitions against child labor, no guaranteed living wage or benefits, no public services that might conceivably compete with private services, no health and safety protections that might cut into corporate profits.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AGAINST CHILDREN ON THE RISE

Mental health specialists say there has been an increase in domestic violence against children - largely a result of the violence that has gripped Iraq since the US-led invasion in 2003. They say the violence has affected people's behavior. Before the invasion, there were about 90 psychiatrists in Iraq and some 45 psychologists but today there are fewer than 40 total.

New Bush Scandal: Helping Big Oil Companies Hide Billions From Government at Taxpayer Expense

Oil companies leasing federal land to drill for oil are required to pay the government royalties based on a percentage of their sales. But under the Royalty-in-Kind program, the companies can pay in the form of oil and gas instead of cash. The problem is that oil and gas prices have increased more than the value of the oil and gas royalty revenues being received, meaning that the oil companies are managing to withhold a growing amount of their profits from Uncle Sam.

Wolfowitz’s tomb

Salon
by Sidney Blumenthal

05/24/07

Paul Wolfowitz’s doctrines are a summa of numerous failed political dogmas of the 20th century. His notion of politics was essentially Bolshevik, but less democratic in practice than Lenin’s. Wolfowitz had no concept of mass politics. Nor did he have an idea of democratic centralism, the core of Leninism, by which the vanguard led the cells of the party. Wolfowitz believed only in the vanguard. The dutiful student of obscurantist authoritarian philosopher Leo Strauss operated as a solitary intellectual at the head of a single cell, the lone Wolfowitz. His view of international political dynamics was a strange concoction of the most heated, impassioned idea of Leon Trotsky — the permanent revolution — admixed with the most rigid, Manichaean metaphor of John Foster Dulles — the domino theory of the Cold War. Dulles’ idea, applied to Southeast Asia, was a reaction to his mistaken understanding of Communist expansion as Trotskyist in conception. From this thesis and antithesis came the synthesis of Paul Wolfowitz. Welcome to the dustbin of history...

The cabal strikes back

You would think that a political tendency such as the neoconservatives, one that has presided over a disastrous war which is increasingly unpopular, and which has unleashed a wave of resentment and even hatred against them, would just crawl back under the rock from whence they sprang and lay low for the duration. Not the neocons, however: they may be down, but they are far from out, … The President, reined in by his party’s fear of electoral disaster and his nation’s war weariness, has hesitated to go all the way with the neocons’ plan to open up the second phase of their bid to ‘transform’ the Middle East into a pile of ‘democratic’ rubble: no one in this country but Dick Cheney and his boys think going to war with Iran is such a grand idea, but that isn’t stopping the neocons from trying to pull it off anyway...

Marine document details red tape v. Iraq gear

Gas station shuts pumps over prices

Guardian [UK]

05/25/07

Motorists pulled in to Harvey Pollack’s gas station Thursday, honked and gave him a thumbs-up — because he wasn’t selling any fuel. The owner of Towne Market Mobil in this suburb north of Milwaukee shut down his pumps for 24 hours, hoping to start a movement aimed at persuading oil companies to lower their prices. ‘Somebody out there is making money at these prices, but not me,’ said Pollack, 57. ‘So I just thought: What can I do to help the consumer?” … Maria McClory, 38, drove 10 miles out of her way to buy a diet soda from Pollack’s station after seeing local television coverage of the protest. ‘I just wanted to support them and thank them for making a statement,” said McClory, who drives about 100 miles a day for work in her sport utility vehicle. Other drivers were more skeptical. Jeff Bensman, 52, pulled in expecting to gas up his Honda sedan. He said he appreciated the protest but did not think it would make much difference...

Iraq funding: Congress bends public over, Bush thrusts

Morris County Daily Record

Bowing to President Bush, the Democratic-controlled Congress grudgingly approved fresh billions for the Iraq war Thursday night, minus the troop withdrawal timeline that drew his earlier veto. ‘The Iraqi government needs to show real progress in return for America’s continued support and sacrifice,’ said the commander in chief, and he warned that August could prove to be a bloody month for U.S. troops in Baghdad’s murderous neighborhoods...

Stop WWF's Betrayal of the Earth's Last Ancient Forests

By Rainforest Portal, a project of Ecological Internet, Inc. http://www.rainforestportal.org/ May 24, 2007

TAKE ACTION WWF is the world's largest ancient forest logging apologist; actively promoting questionable "certified, sustainable" logging in Guyana, Russia and -- and may be the World's greatest threat facing endangered ancient forests http://www.rainforestportal.org/alerts/send.asp?id=wwf_ancient_forest_logging

For many years the international conservation group WWF has supported Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification that first-time logging of ancient primary and old-growth forests is "sustainable". Millions of hectares of intact, large rainforest ecosystems have been and are being heavily industrially logged for the first time with WWF and FSC's stamp of approval. Ecological Internet (EI) recently reported upon Samling of Malaysia's activities in Guyana under the name of Barama, which received significant international bank financing based upon assurances provided by WWF and an FSC certificate of good forest management. Sadly, WWF's partnering with this particular rainforest destroyer in Guyana is not at all unique. Similar large-scale, often illegal and highly socially and environmentally destructive logging of ancient forests in the Congo basin countries, Russia, and Indonesia continue with the blessing of WWF and FSC as their official policy. WWF's greenwashing, and propagation and subsidizing of the myth of "sustainable ancient forest logging", may be the greatest threat to the world's remaining ancient forests.

Syngenta Threatens to Violently Expel the Family Farmers of the Via Campesina - Act Now!

Letter to the Governor of the State of Paraná

Your Excellency Governor Roberto Requião

We are a group of independent scientists working to reclaim science for the public good ( http://www.i-sis.org.uk ), and exposing the bad science promoted by biotech corporations like Syngenta and Monsanto, which is having devastating effects on world food security and health. We have reviewed extensive evidence on the failures and hazards of genetically modified (GM) monoculture crops as well as the successes and benefits of sustainable food systems such as agroecology. The review has been published in an influential report, The Case for a GM-Free Sustainable World in 2003, translated into many languages including Portuguese and Spanish ( http://www.indsp.org/GM-FreeEspagnol.pdf ).

Since then, the case has grown much stronger as further evidence of health and environmental hazards has accumulated, and accelerating global warming, coupled with the depletion of water and fossil fuel, falling grain yields and increasing pressures on food production from the demands on land for growing biofuel crops have made it much more urgent to shift comprehensively to sustainable food systems.

We shall be presenting the latest evidence on the hazards, failures and deceptions surrounding GM crops to the European Parliament on 12 June 2007 ( http://www.i-sis.org.uk/EUmeeting120607.php ), to call a GM-Free Europe and a GM-free world.

We therefore greatly support your initiative to reclaim Syngenta´s illegal experimental site in Brazil in order to turn it into a school for agroecology. We stand with Your Excellency in solidarity in the face of the pressure the multinational is exerting against the Government of Paraná.

Please, Your Excellency, continue to take all of the necessary measures to protect the reclaimed site and to enable the family farmers of the Via Campesina to remain there.

Yours Sincerely,

Dr. Mae-Wan Ho
