Mobile towers banned from residential areas

The telecommunication industry in Kolkota will not be allowed to set up mobile towers in congested residential areas.

The Environment department has directed the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to implent its decision. Circulars have already been sent to various telecom service providers such as Bharti Mobile Limited (Airtel), Vodafone Essar East Limited, Tata Indicom and BSNL.

The decision is based on concerns regarding possible health hazards caused by the effects of electromagnetic radiation emitted from antennae on telecommunication towers.
