Middle East: Bush and His Pathetic Record

Le Journal de Dimanche's Gilles Delafon writes that in the Middle East, "George Bush will have failed as few American presidents have before him. His diplomatic record there belongs in the category of pure calamity - his latest visit to the Near East this week reminds us of that once again."

Evidence of White House Meddling at EPA

Erica Werner, of The Associated Press: "The head of the Environmental Protection Agency initially supported giving California and other states full or partial permission to limit tailpipe emissions - but reversed himself after hearing from the White House, a report said Monday. The report by the Democratic staff of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee cites interviews and depositions with high-level EPA officials. It amounts to the first solid evidence of the political interference alleged by Democrats and environmentalists since Administrator Stephen Johnson denied California's waiver request in December."

Mai in Berlin.

Britain Obstructs Global Ban on Use of Cluster Bombs

Kim Sengupta, of The Independent UK: "The British Government is accused of being the chief obstacle to the signing of a treaty to ban cluster bombs, which have maimed and killed thousands of civilians worldwide. Countries that have suffered the impact of the bombs, humanitarian groups and former commanders of British forces have called for the UK to drop its insistence on retaining cluster munitions, a stance, they say, that is likely to scupper hopes of securing an agreement at an international conference starting in Dublin today."

America AWOL on Cluster Bombs

Lora Lumpe, of Foreign Policy In Focus, writes: "More than 100 governments, including all major NATO allies, met on May 19 to begin two weeks of negotiations in Dublin, Ireland to finalize a global treaty banning cluster munitions that cause unacceptable harm to civilians. The U.S. government will not be there, and is exerting pressure on allies to weaken the treaty. Washington claims that future joint military operations will be undermined if allied governments prohibit the use of these weapons."

111 Nations, But Not US, Adopt Cluster Bomb Treaty

Shawn Pogatchnik, for The Associated Press, reports from Dublin, Ireland: "Chief negotiators of a landmark treaty banning cluster bombs predicted Friday that the United States will never again use the weapons, a critical component of American air and artillery power. The treaty formally adopted Friday by 111 nations, including many of America's major NATO partners, would outlaw all current designs of cluster munitions and require destruction of stockpiles within eight years. It also opens the possibility that European allies could order US bases located in their countries to remove cluster bombs from their stocks."

US Navy Aircraft Violates Venezuela's Airspace

Patricia Rondon, of Reuters: "A US Navy jet violated Venezuelan airspace around two small Caribbean islands over the weekend in what the South American country said was a provocation coordinated with neighboring Colombia. Venezuela and the United States bicker over everything from energy policy to arms sales. The incursion comes amid heightened tensions over accusations that Venezuela helped a guerrilla army fighting the government in US ally Colombia. The Pentagon said a Navy aircraft on a counternarcotics mission had navigation problems that led it to stray into Venezuelan airspace on Saturday."

McCain Finds a Thorny Path in Ethics Effort

Barry Meier and Kate Zernike, of The New York Times: "Sorting out the lobbying entanglements of his campaign advisers is proving to be a messy business for Senator John McCain. On Monday, just days after it issued new rules to address conflicts of interest, the McCain campaign was furiously sifting through the business records of aides and advisers. The new rules were prompted by disclosures that led to the abrupt departure from the campaign of a number of aides who worked as lobbyists, including some with ties to foreign governments."

Quebecois Libre
by Bradley Doucet

Diverting crops like corn to ethanol refineries increases the demand for corn, which raises the price of corn. This in turn causes some farmers to shift fields to corn production, and some consumers to substitute away from corn, both of which raise the prices of other staples. … But if consumers in rich countries want biofuels, then that’s what they want, and markets will just have to adjust, right? Except that it’s not consumers who are choosing to use biofuels in a free market — it’s governments that are pushing biofuels on consumers with market-distorting mandates and subsidies...

Federal government aims to bankrupt us all

Disloyal Opposition
by JD Tuccille

USA Today came out with a troubling (but not unexpected) story stating that the federal government is way over its head in red ink — so deep in debt that if you divied it up among the population, the tab would be ‘nearly $500,000 per household.’ D.C.’s estimated $57.3 trillion in liabilities (State and local debt raise the total to $61.7 trillion) comes courtesy primarily of those oh-so-popular entitlement programs that keep the population sucking at the government tit and voting for more. Medicare alone has an unfunded liability of $30.4 trillion.

Government views you as a source of income. You need to know that to protect yourself. It could be just that they are looking for more ways to suck out more money, perhaps fining you for something like your storage unit, something that has never before been worth noticing. Or it may be the profit they can suck out of your children once they are pulled into the Social Services System. These forms of conversion take place in tens of thousands of cases every single day...

Karl Rove’s sly deal with Fox

by Amanda Terkel and Matt Corley

It has now been more than three months since Karl Rove first appeared on television as a Fox News political analyst on Feb 5. In no fewer than 57 appearances, he has increasingly been welcomed into the Fox News fraternity, even joking that the ‘”Hannity & Colmes’ show should be renamed the ‘Colmes & Rove’ show. After departing from a Bush administration in political tatters last August, he has reemerged to hold forth at length on the 2008 presidential race. And he may have plenty of seasoned political wisdom to offer Fox’s audience. Rove, however, is playing a strategic role that he and the network refuse to reveal to viewers. Fox News hosts routinely introduce Rove as a ‘former senior advisor to President Bush,’ ‘the architect,’ a ‘political wizard’ and a ‘famed political consultant.’ But never has he been introduced as he should be — as an informal advisor and maxed-out donor to John McCain’s presidential campaign...

Let's remember that it isn't about who occupies the chair in the Oval Office, but those who are around that person. And that doesn't change much whether the occupant is a Democrat or a Republican. He thinks it is a "live-or-die" situation for the US government. Therefore, they would be ready to implement a military plan, which could include an invasion or an attack from Colombia. "For that reason, they brought the Fourth Fleet back, wiped out the Colombian guerrillas and will make Colombia play the same role that Honduras played against Nicaragua" in 1979.
