Put Masts on Hold

The Evening News has thrust the issue of mobile phone masts firmly into the public spotlight since 2000.

It has raised public awareness of the possible health risks the structures pose and fought against them being installed near homes and schools until it is proved they are safe.

David Bradford, chair of the planning committee at Norwich City Council, said of our campaign: “Although our hands are often tied by legislation, we do always try to take into account people's opinions when deciding whether to approve an application, and the Evening News has been a great support with that, it's been very useful to have their input.”

Some of the masts the Evening News campaign has helped to prevent being built include:

February 2007 - Colman Road, Norwich: Norwich City Council turned down plans for an 11.8m T-Mobile mast close to St Anne's Church.

March 2007 - Aylsham Road, Norwich: A campaign and 600 signature petition to stop a T-Mobile phone mast from being installed near a popular bikers' pub and sheltered housing ensures plans were rejected.

June 2007 - Broadland District Councillors rejected an application from T-mobile to build a 12m mast near the Blue Boar pub in Wroxham Road.
