Ban on phone masts on Sefton Council land could be lifted

A LIFTING of the controversial ban on phone masts being placed on council property will be discussed at Sefton’s next full council meeting, in September.
A moratorium currently exists which prohibits the council from putting mobile telecommunications on its land and buildings.
Councillors agreed the moratorium in July 2000 over concerns for public safety, amenity and the visual impact of phone masts.
However, the council has little or no say on the siting of phone masts, apart from when they require planning permission, and critics say the ban has lead to masts being put up in places that are less acceptable to the community, such as in residential areas near schools and offices, when they could be put in places such as cemeteries or on the end of Southport pier.
