Obama, Bush and the limits of power

Campaign For Liberty
by Anthony Gregory

08/13/09

It should now be beyond dispute that the Obama administration represents a continuation, solidification and expansion of the Bush legacy, with some minor changes in some areas and a vast acceleration of government growth in others. And yet, as we can joyously witness, the president is running into problems. The most conspicuous feature of the Bush years was the nearly invincible faith in government power in the realm of national security...

The pursuit of true security

Foreign Policy in Focus
by Marc Raskin and Megan Cheney

08/13/09

Paradoxically, our massive overseas presence has the unintended consequence of making the United States weaker — politically, economically, and morally — instead of stronger. In order to provide real security for the United States, we break free of the idea that the U.S. is a global warrior state. This will require the United States to remove troops from many bases abroad, hold back on an extensive program of covert operations, and extricate the military from unilateral expeditions. If we do not do so, we will only exacerbate our own insecurity...

Rove "Driving Force" Behind US Attorney Firings

Jason Leopold, Truthout: "Political adviser Karl Rove and other officials inside George W. Bush's White House pushed for the firing of a key federal prosecutor because he wasn't cooperating with Republican plans for indicting Democrats and their allies before the 2006 election, according to internal documents and depositions. The evidence was released Tuesday and turned over to a special prosecutor by House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers."

Why are we in Afghanistan?

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

08/14/09

Okay, let’s see if I get this straight: the real problem is Pakistan, not Afghanistan. However, we can’t go into Pakistan because we’re hated there, and the very act of intervening could and would give al-Qaeda the kind of momentum it needs to overthrow the Pakistani government. And we can’t even pressure the Pakistanis to crack down on the Islamists who may be sympathetic to al-Qaeda, because they can’t do it, and our insisting on it would only lead to hard feelings and ‘misunderstanding.’ Okay, I get it. So, please tell me: why are we in Afghanistan?

U.S., Local Officials Seek to Curb Drivers' Distractions as Crashes Spike

By Ashley Halsey III
Washington Post Staff Writer

Thursday, August 13, 2009

It is probably safe to assume that the last three things Tiffany DeGroft thought of that cloudy October morning were her boyfriend, her cellphone and the picket fence that would cause her death.
