Swine Flu Drugs Useless And Dangerous, Particularly For Children

Blackwater Heir Wants to Keep State Dept. Security Contract

Spencer Ackerman, The Washington Independent: "Even as a wrongful-death lawsuit moves forward against the controversial private security company formerly known as Blackwater, the firm seeks to renew its contract with the State Department to guard diplomats when the deal expires next year. And the State Department shows no signs of ruling the company out of competition, despite a high-profile incident in 2007 that left 17 Iraqi civilians dead."

Endless War: The Suicide of the United States

Dahr Jamail, Truthout: "Sergio Kochergin, back home from his second deployment in Iraq, held a gun in his mouth, trying to muster the courage to pull the trigger. Untreated post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and accompanying nightmares and insomnia, heavy substance abuse, and several failed attempts at self-medication had taken their toll on him."

My 1933 Nightmare

By David Michael Green

Can we really live in a country populated by so many fools, people who can so readily, proudly and belligerently be made into tools of their own destruction? Can the greatest political, economic, cultural and military power on the world's stage possibly be so incredibly backward at its core?

Stimulus or Bust

US Battling CIA Rendition Case in Three Courts

Vodafone's second phone mast bid for Easington Lane rejected

Published Date: 10 August 2009

By Ross Robertson

Inspectors have rejected a second bid to build a mobile phone mast next to a neigbourhood pub.

Planners at Sunderland City Council rejected Vodafone's scheme to build the 3G mast next to the Three Tuns pub in High Street, Easington Lane, in January.

They said the 12metre-high column, which would have three antennae, would have a negative impact on the appearance of the area.

Hetton Town Council also objected to the mast because of the site's nearness to Easington Lane Primary School.

Drowning in debt

New York Daily News
by Mort Zuckerman

Obama’s spending and borrowing leaves U.S. gasping for air …. The unprecedented, improbable and indeed almost unimaginable global financial crisis has virtually put an end to the comfortable notion that American and Western capitalism would dominate the world economy. In turn, the financial meltdown threatening another Great Depression has been the rationale for a phenomenal expansion of government spending to prop up demand and fend off economic disaster...

A new abuse on Wall Street

Boston Globe
by Robert Kuttner

Ever since the financial crisis began in 2007, there has been a tension between recovery and reform. It seems to make sense to get the economy back on track now and worry about reforms later. But a time of financial crisis, when Wall Street needs big-time government help, is the rare moment when government has the leverage to demand fundamental change. Otherwise, the moment is lost and the cycle of risky practices and taxpayer bailouts continues. Despite the infusion of massive taxpayer funds, however, it’s back to business as usual on Wall Street…. Here’s one new abuse that should be stopped before it spreads: Big private equity companies, which are largely unregulated, are hungry to take over failed banks...

MPs back torture damages plan

BBC News [UK]

Torture victims should be able to sue foreign governments in the UK courts, a committee of MPs and peers have said. The Joint Committee on Human Rights has called on the government to take an international lead, saying the plan would help rehabilitate victims. Minsters have argued that they are bound by a state immunity convention and have suggested the move could cause international tensions. But the committee said practical concerns were of secondary importance...

Tortured logic

by Digby

We weren’t sure he was going to even go this far, but according to news reports over the weekend, Attorney General Holder has decided on a ‘narrow’ investigation into torture. In fact, it’s so narrow that it won’t investigate any of the torture that was authorized by DOJ functionary John Yoo at all. Using inverted pretzel logic, they are apparently going to go after those who failed to follow John Yoo’s directives. For instance, according to the LA Times, Holder will not investigate allegations of waterboarding in themselves, but rather if they failed to properly follow their waterboarding instructions to the letter …

Afghan Drug Lords: Targeted Until Proven Innocent

By Stephen M. Walt

This is a formula to escalate the cycle of violence in Afghanistan, not to end it. For anyone who's been awake and watching the many failed strategies in the US war on drugs at home, it just looks stupid.

Facts vs. Beliefs: Today's Ancient Warfare

By Geff Gates

Wars are won by those skilled at creating consensus opinions. Where is modern-day warfare waged? Not on the ground; nor in the air or on the seas. What's new is the technology that enables psyops on a global scale.
