Blackwater (Xe) Accused in Afghan Murders

David Zucchino, The Los Angeles Times: "Mirza Mohammed Dost stood at the foot of his son's grave, near a headstone that read, 'Raheb Dost, martyred by Americans.' His son was no insurgent, Dost said. He was walking home from prayers on the night of May 5 when he was shot and killed on a busy Kabul street by U.S. security contractors. 'The Americans must answer for my son's death,' Dost said as a large crowd of young men murmured in approval."

Weg mit Sanktionen bei Hartz IV

13. August 2009

The tragedy of our “disappeared” veterans

AlterNet
by Penny Coleman

08/12/09

McMahon came home from Afghanistan with a serious drinking problem, a hair-trigger temper and conditioned to rely on his combat skills for survival. Both his marriage and his military career quickly unraveled, and then he was arrested. Nobody diagnosed his PTSD until he got to Groveland. McMahon’s obsession with safety and guns, and his compulsive drinking are both typical of a post-traumatic stress injury, but instead of diagnosis and treatment, he was left to his own compromised resources and promptly landed in jail. In terms of the bottom line, it’s a trifecta for the military when that happens. A damaged soldier is disappeared, the cost of treatment avoided and the evidence that would prove how often veterans find it impossible to readjust when they come home is erased...

Addicted to war

Empire Burlesque
by Chris Floyd

08/11/09

Looks like the ‘Good War’ in Afghanistan is morphing even more directly into the ‘Drug War’ that the U.S. government has been waging all over the world — and especially against its own people — for almost 40 years now, with all the attendant aggrandizement of authoritarian powers and degradation of civil liberties and human rights. … Of course, the runaway cultivation of opium in Afghanistan — which is now flooding not only the West but also vast swathes of Central Asia with cheap heroin — is a direct result of the American invasion in 2001: an operation ostensibly designed to capture Osama bin Laden, who somehow curiously slipped away from the Americans’ curiously porous encirclement, never to be seen again (except of course for a few curiously timed transmission that seemed, curiously enough, to be geared to the domestic political needs of America’s militarist factions)...

The thirty years’ war

The Nation
by Robert Dreyfuss

08/12/09

With great anticipation, I trucked over to the posh St. Regis Hotel, just north of the White House, to see Ambassador Richard Holbrooke and his team at an event sponsored by the Center for American Progress. I shouldn’t have bothered. The weird thing about the event is that in the room were literally hundreds of the Washington foreign policy elite, current and former officials, people with lots of experience in the Middle East and South Asia, and, of course, journalists, too. And Holbrooke brought with him literally his entire team, minus a few who couldn’t be there: top regional experts such as Barnett Rubin and Vali Nasr, and about a dozen other members of Holbrooke’s Af-Pak task force. But the session was boring, pedestrian, and so mind-numbingly simplistic that it seemed like Holbooke and Co. were talking to third graders. And their goal was to convince us that the ‘civilians’ involved in the Thirty Years’ War in Afghanistan can rebuild that shattered nation from the ground up. They didn’t convince me...

US pols ran up $180.68 billion deficit in July

Wall Street Journal

08/12/09

The federal government spent more than it pocketed a 10th straight month during July, nearing a record last set in 1992 for a string of deficits. Burdened by Wall Street bailout costs and shriveled corporate profits, the government was $180.68 billion in the red during July, the Treasury Department said Wednesday in its monthly budget statement. July 2008’s federal budget deficit was $102.77 billion. The deficit record for any month is $193.86 billion, in February this year...

Attorney General Holder: Look at the torture photos

Salon
by Daphne Eviatar

08/12/09

If, as the latest reports indicate, Eric Holder is serious about prosecuting the worst torture and abuse of ‘war on terror’ prisoners that occurred during the Bush administration, then there’s some key evidence he’s going to want to take a look at: photographs. Although Bush Justice Department prosecutors claimed they didn’t have the facts to support prosecuting anyone for the mysterious deaths and disappearances of detainees hauled out of Bagram and Abu Ghraib in body bags, the photographs — which two courts have now ordered the Obama administration to turn over — would seem likely to provide some of the missing evidence. The photos I’m talking about are the same ones that President Obama back in April promised to release to the public by May. Then, after consulting with Defense Department and CIA leaders, he changed his mind...

Well Actually: Some people are allergic to WiFi. It can cause headaches & muscle pains in some people, i know this because i have a friend that can not be around WiFi. Me, i have WiFi in my house and love it, so i am not a WiFi hater. The same type of "allergies" occur with these new "energy efficient" light bulbs. Energy Efficient Light Bulbs emit almost 10 times as much electro magnetic radiation as a regular light bulb. An older friend of mine runs a garage repairing cars, he has around 30 lights in his garage. A few years back he replaced all the lights in his garage with these energy efficient light bulbs. Soon after he had awful pains in his back and arms. Doctors ran tests for a year and could not find any thing wrong. We saw a story on TV about how these light bulbs are causing problems like this in some people, we told him, he removed them and now his pains are gone.

People can say what they want but i know first hand that people can and do have "allergies" to WiFi and Energy Efficient Bulbs.

Keep up the good work, love listening to BOL while going for my nightly walk.
