Misconceptions found in tower debate

Just saying that you have not been affected by electromagnetic radiation and that you are healthy says nothing at all about the general population. ...

90,000 flu deaths: Where did that number come from?

Christian Science Monitor

The warning is dire: Up to 90,000 ‘possible’ deaths from a potential swine flu outbreak. But how did the president’s science advisers, who came up with the number, reach that estimate? It is based on complicated models of how such illnesses are transmitted, how they mutate, how prepared the healthcare system is, and what’s known from the patterns of past flu epidemics, such as the ones in 1918, 1957, and 1968. It even taps the so-called ‘virus detectives,’ a branch of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that tracks, in the best Sherlock Holmes manner, the threats to America’s health — often traveling to remote parts of the world to study outbreaks. The problem with dire warnings, though, is that the complacency scientists are in part trying to break may be caused by the very studies they tout — the crying wolf syndrome. The avian bird flu predictions in 2005 included estimates of millions dead. Worldwide, 282 people died.”

The Widening Gap In America's Two Tiered Society

By Emily Spence

If the U.S. populace somehow imagines that its members are viewed any differently than any other populations across the world that are used to produce maximal profits for the top economic class, there's a rude awakening in store ahead. Further, most legislators simply do not care whether middle and lower class interests are or aren't well served as long as they, themselves, can somehow make out well in the times ahead.

Bernanke: Four more years

The Cunning Realist

by staff

What is there to say about Ben Bernanke’s reappointment that I haven’t already said here and in this article? This is a terrible decision by Obama. You cannot credibly claim to be an agent of change, then praise and retain a key holdover from a disastrous administration — a beneficiary of the same wisdom and judgment that produced Miers, Kerik and Brownie as fellow nominees, and a profoundly mediocre policymaker who played an important role in one of history’s most destructive economic busts...

Torture: No pardons, no excuses for the real terrorists

Center for a Stateless Society
by Alex R. Knight III

Look, it’s all well and fine, given the inherent nature of government, to cherry-pick big time and slap the wrists of a few sadistic individuals who work for one of the American government’s numerous spy agencies because a few select people were treated badly by them. It’s another, in the stark light of reality, to excuse the mass atrocities of the middle-eastern wars and those who authorized them; the vicious foreign policy stances that enabled them; and the money taken from Americans by the IRS and other taxing agents at gunpoint which pays for them. In short, no one should be making excuses for what government is and what it does — the evidence itself puts paid to that. Nor should anyone be formulating lame excuses in order to keep the institution of government in operation...

August 2009,1518,643998,00.html
