TELECOM giant Orange have appealed against the refusal of permission to let them to double the radio waves emitted from a Harpenden phone mast.
St Albans District Council planning officers had recommended that Orange should be given permission to install new mobile phone equipment on the Shakespeare Road water tower. However councillors turned down the planning application on the grounds of insufficient consultation.
It has been established that emissions from the tower which is in an area with young families, would double if the new equipment was located there. However health considerations are not considered grounds for planning decisions so councillors had to find another legitimate reason for refusal.
