Private Altersvorsorge nutzt nur Besserverdienenden: Bundesregierung täuscht Geringverdiener bei Riesterrente

11. Januar 2008

Gesetzliche Rente stabilisieren, Altersarmut verhindern

Reclaim Congress: Demand an end to oligarchy rule

Nolan Chart
by Gary Wood

01/10/08

Our legislative branch has been usurped by two political parties and it is long overdue their reign be brought to an end! With an ever increasing number of Independent voters it is time to address a key challenge to our Constitution that grips the U.S. Congress. Newly elected Senators and Representatives cannot take their oath and begin to represent their constituents. Those elected by the people are subjugated in status based on a vial, derisive system we have allowed to grow within the halls of Congress...

Democracy’s Rules: Make voting easier

Seattle Post-Intelligencer
by staff

01/10/08

Justices’ questions suggest the conservative U.S. Supreme Court majority doesn’t feel it should even be bothered with a general challenge to laws demanding voters provide identification at polling places. The attitude of the justices on the court that selected a president in 2000 ought to push Congress and the Washington Legislature to do the right thing on their own. Make it easier rather than harder for people to vote. That starts with Washington repealing the identification requirement lawmakers and Gov. Chris Gregoire approved in the wake of the 2004 counting problems. As a recent Brown University study showed, identification laws suppress turnout among minority, lower-income and less-educated populations...

An old Democratic fault line

The American Prospect
by Harold Meyerson

01/10/08

All 50 states hold elections, but only New Hampshire raises the dead. John McCain and Hillary Clinton, like Bill before her, have now been saved from political extinction by Granite State voters, who have managed in the process to set up a protracted contest for the Democratic presidential nod. (The Republicans were never going to avoid one.) The battle in the Democratic Party features divisions that the world’s oldest political party has never before experienced, just as it has never before seen candidates like Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. The gender gap, up to now a phenomenon that distinguished one party’s supporters from the other’s, has become a phenomenon that distinguishes one Democrat’s supporters from another’s...

The latest version of Hillary Clinton

Reason
by Steve Chapman

01/10/08

Like the tears, her victory speech suggested that Clinton is resolved to inhabit a new persona, at least as long as she needs to. Instead of her usual power suit, she wore a flowery brocade jacket that oozed femininity. She gushed about her ‘full heart,’ and how she had ‘found my own voice.’ Sixty years old, with all that massive experience in the work of transforming the nation, and she’s just now finding her voice? More likely, she’s just found a new way to disguise her essential self. This is not her first conspicuous change of convenience. … Maybe this evolution is just one of the special complications that face women in politics. But it also suggests a willingness to use any false front that can be helpful. It betrays the calculating inauthenticity that makes so many people wary or hostile toward her...

New Big Brother security rules for drivers’ licenses

Yahoo! News

01/10/08

Americans born after Dec. 1, 1964, will have to get more secure driver’s licenses in the next six years under ambitious post-9/11 security rules to be unveiled Friday by federal officials. The Homeland Security Department has spent years crafting the final regulations for the REAL ID Act, a law designed to make it harder for terrorists, illegal immigrants and con artists to get government-issued identification. The effort once envisioned to take effect in 2008 has been pushed back in the hopes of winning over skeptical state officials. Even with more time, more federal help and technical advances, REAL ID still faces stiff opposition from civil liberties groups. To address some of those concerns, the government now plans to phase in a secure ID initiative that Congress passed into law in 2005. Now, DHS plans a key deadline in 2011, and then further measures to be enacted three years later...
