Syngenta Threatens to Violently Expel the Family Farmers of the Via Campesina - Act Now!
Letter to the Governor of the State of Paraná
Your Excellency Governor Roberto Requião
We are a group of independent scientists working to reclaim science for the public good ( http://www.i-sis.org.uk ), and exposing the bad science promoted by biotech corporations like Syngenta and Monsanto, which is having devastating effects on world food security and health. We have reviewed extensive evidence on the failures and hazards of genetically modified (GM) monoculture crops as well as the successes and benefits of sustainable food systems such as agroecology. The review has been published in an influential report, The Case for a GM-Free Sustainable World in 2003, translated into many languages including Portuguese and Spanish ( http://www.indsp.org/GM-FreeEspagnol.pdf ).
Since then, the case has grown much stronger as further evidence of health and environmental hazards has accumulated, and accelerating global warming, coupled with the depletion of water and fossil fuel, falling grain yields and increasing pressures on food production from the demands on land for growing biofuel crops have made it much more urgent to shift comprehensively to sustainable food systems.
We shall be presenting the latest evidence on the hazards, failures and deceptions surrounding GM crops to the European Parliament on 12 June 2007 ( http://www.i-sis.org.uk/EUmeeting120607.php ), to call a GM-Free Europe and a GM-free world.
We therefore greatly support your initiative to reclaim Syngenta´s illegal experimental site in Brazil in order to turn it into a school for agroecology. We stand with Your Excellency in solidarity in the face of the pressure the multinational is exerting against the Government of Paraná.
Please, Your Excellency, continue to take all of the necessary measures to protect the reclaimed site and to enable the family farmers of the Via Campesina to remain there.
Yours Sincerely,
Dr. Mae-Wan Ho
