Phone mast squashed
02 November 2006
A PHONE mast which has blighted the lives of families for a decade has been removed.
The mast, operated by mobile phone giant Orange, has now been taken down from Bedonwell School, in Bedonwell Road, Belvedere.
Campaigner Alan Eaton, the brainchild behind action group Orange Squash, said: "We have long campaigned for the removal of this mast and finally it has been taken down."
Fellow resident Ted Gorman said: "The residents are delighted as for the first time in ten years they are no longer under the shadow of the mobile phone mast."
Orange have had a mast on the school site since 1995, but planned to remove it and replace it on a site 700 metres from the school.
The proposals outraged parents who feared for the health and safety of their children who attend the school.
Mr Eaton and fellow residents launched a campaign against the proposal collecting 300 signatures from parents.
He went on to collect a further 500 signatures and gave the petition to David Evennett, MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford, who handed it to Parliament. The mobile phone company has since found a new site to put their mast, in Woolwich Road, Belvedere. Councillor David Leaf is leading opposition against the proposals.
Bedonwell residents also have another campaign on their hands as T-Mobile has also claimed interest in the site.
