The UK Passport Service has now issued its first biometric e-passport, it announced on 5 March 2006. The new passports will include a chip with the holder's facial biometric and will be introduced gradually over a five month period this year. Home Office minister Andy Burnham said that the government is looking to expand the use of biometrics in passports. 'ePassports are the first step in secure biometric identity documentation,' he said.
