A NIGHT attack by American troops in the eastern province of Nangarharkilled at least 10 Afghans, and within hours protests by their relatives and friends turned violent, leading to at least one death, according to witnesses and Afghan officials.

I cringe when I hear the words ‘thank you for your service.’ I’m sure that many people in military uniform joined out of a sincere, albeit misguided, belief that that the wars they were fighting were in some sense to defend American lives and freedom. But it’s utterly nonsensical. Every time I hear someone say the troops in Iraq are ‘fighting for your right’ to do this or that, or ‘fighting for our freedom,’ I have to restrain myself from going ballistic. Gary Trudeau even (even?) got into the act. In a recent Doonesbury strip, the wounded Iraq vet kid with the stutter told one of the open-carry people at Starbucks ‘I spent two years behind an M-60 defending your right to be a moron about guns.’ No kidding? How exactly would those guys’ rights to pack heat at Starbucks have been threatened if Bush hadn’t invaded Iraq?

As usual, on most issues Obama gave himself a lot of wiggle room, so that if a strategic shift were required he could dance around the contradiction with ease, but on one question he painted himself into a corner: ‘Let me say this as plainly as I can: by August 31, 2010, our combat mission in Iraq will end.’ He said that, not only during the campaign, but in a speech at Camp Lejeune last year. So, we elected a president who promised a withdrawal from Iraq that he, or the generals who tell him what to do, is now further delaying. And, of course, the timetable he’s now delaying was already a far cry from what he had promised as a candidate.What are we to think? That may be sad news, but what could we have done differently? Surely it would have been worse to elect a president who did not promise to withdraw, right?
