I have friends who have been held up at passport control when entering the United States, but most of their stories involve only a brief series of professionally conducted questions. I myself have experienced a certain amount of unwarranted humiliation at the hands of power-abusing authorities when crossing the borders of other countries — namely, Armenia, Bulgaria, and, most impudently, Israel where my wife and brother-in-law were detained and interrogated for several hours during our visit last year — but I have never expected to receive such treatment when entering my own country. Indeed, nobody I encountered on this day treated me rudely or abusively, but this little brush with Homeland Security revealed to me that there is a serious dearth of knowledge about the peoples and places against which Homeland Security supposedly exists to protect us...

On the other hand, perhaps we should encourage this Imperial, ‘Get-out-of-my-way-I’m-having-fun’ behavior, because the more time Mr. Obama and brood are out ‘on the town,’ he’ll be away from Washington town, which might — dream on! — distract him from his arrogant, self-centered, it’s-all-about-Me-and-what-I-want absorptions and his all-too-obvious desire to move beyond being a mere Rock-star President and usurp the power of a King, with the total ability to dictate his subjective will to the rest of us, then, obedient ‘Subjects’...

The whole world economy is underwater and the same economists who failed the critical test are manning the pumps. What makes anyone think they know what they are doing? On the surface of it their plan is absurd. Commerce, industry and households drown in a sea of debt; these fellows throw them a bucket of water. Asked to explain themselves, they resort to voodoo economics. ‘If we give Wall Street a lot of taxpayer money they will feel more like lending to households. That will bring a recovery,’ they say. ‘And oh yes, we’ll give money to automakers who couldn’t make it on their own, too.’ The feds are spending trillions — buying up trillions worth of Wall Street’s mistakes … bailing out failed banks, insurance firms and even automobile companies … subsidizing borrowers … and realizing their own boondoggle projects. If Ben Bernanke were a teenaged girl, his name would be written on every public bathroom wall in town...

Drei ethische Dimensionen beschreiben maßgeblich die Zukunfts- und Lebens- möglichkeiten des Menschen: Gerechtigkeit, Frieden und Bewahrung der Schöpfung. Alle drei fordern Gesellschaften und Staaten heraus. Alle drei werden maßgeblich durch den Einsatz und die (Um-)Verteilung öffentlicher Haushaltsmittel also durch die Verwendung der Steuern beeinflusst. Zum Beispiel werden weltweit ca. 2,6 Milliarden € Steuermittel täglich für Rüstung, Militär und Krieg ausgegeben. Die Summe an umweltzerstörenden Subventionen ist so groß, dass sie nicht mehr ermittelbar ist. Diese Ausgaben fördern auch die Umverteilung von Geld, Einfluss und Lebensqualität zu Lasten der Armen.

Dienen Steuern noch überwiegend dem Gemeinwesen? Oder dienen sie mehr dem Machterhalt der herrschenden Schicht und deren Wahlgeschenken? Ist das Arbeitsplatzargument ein Vorwand? Wieviel Schulden hat der Staat? Wie werden sie auf die Bevölkerung umgelegt? Die Zinsen werden mit neuen Krediten bezahlt. Wer sind die Gewinner in diesem Spiel der Macht? Viele, die einige Zusammenhänge erkennen, haben ein Problem. Sie zahlen Steuern und sind so verantwortlich für deren Verwendung, für das weitere Öffnen der Schere zwischen Arm und Reich, zwischen Mächtigen und Ohnmächtigen, für militärische Gewaltanwendung und für die Zerstörung der Umwelt. Und sie sehen, dass sie und ihre Nachkommen dafür haften.

Doch was tun? - Informieren Sie sich und diskutieren Sie mit!
