Generals: Review Bush's Detention Authority — Former generals and U.S. Justice Department officials filed briefs urging the U.S. Supreme Court to review the Bush administration's authority to indefinitely detain the only suspected enemy combatant held on U.S. soil. "This unprecedented expansion of executive authority within the borders of the United States is not only at odds with more than 200 years of history, but it is wholly unnecessary," argued former judges and officials, including former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno and former FBI Director William Sessions. "The federal government is eminently capable of both protecting our nation's security and safeguarding our proud tradition of civil liberties."

Families in new phone mast fight

24 October 2008 17:00

Families are being urged to oppose a mobile phone mast application at a site near Earlham police station where previous plans have already been refused.

Phone giant 02 has applied to put a 12.5m slim line street works column with three antennae on the highway verge adjoining the police station in Earlham Road.

As reported in The Evening News, families won a fight to stop a mast being installed there in January 2007, after city planners went against the recommendations of officers to approve proposals by O2 for a 12.5m mock telegraph mast.

More than 40 people had raised concerns about the plans and planning committee members received 11 letters of objection citing visual impact and health fears. Councillors agreed that it would have been an eyesore and turned it down.

McCain Campaign Predicts Its Own Loss, Finger-Pointing Ensues

Jonathan Martin, Mike Allen and John F. Harris, The Politico: "With despair rising even among many of John McCain's own advisors, influential Republicans inside and outside his campaign are engaged in an intense round of blame-casting and rear-covering - much of it virtually conceding that an Election Day rout is likely.

New Polls Paint Bleak Battleground Map for McCain Campaign

Steven Thomma and Marc Caputo, McClatchy Newspapers: "A series of new polls released Thursday found a bleak outlook for John McCain, even in traditionally Republican states, and a potential landslide victory for Democrat Barack Obama on Nov. 4. The polls found McCain trailing Obama in the battleground states of Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania and suggest that he's behind even in solidly red states such as Indiana, and they also suggest that his talk about 'Joe the Plumber' has done little to help his cause."

The “real” America, really

Los Angeles Times
by Rosa Brooks

According to Sarah Palin, she and John McCain ‘believe that the best of America is in these small towns that we get to visit, and in these wonderful little pockets of what I call the real America, being here with all of you hardworking, very patriotic, um, very, um, pro-America areas of this great nation.’ Um, very, um. … Yeah. Palin later backed away from these remarks, but the McCain-Palin campaign’s staff and surrogates — and even the guy at the top of the ticket — keep hammering the same message: Some parts of America — and some Americans — are just more authentic and ‘pro-America’ than others...

Government has caused this panic

by Richard J. Grant

Are you worried about your portfolio allocations? Are you worried about the value of your home? Then you should worry about the value of your home’s home. If you live near me, that means the USA. It seems fairly easy to teach people how to handle their portfolios. But many still panic when the markets turn down, and they suffer for it. By contrast, it is far more difficult to teach people how to take care of their country. But when they panic at election time, we all suffer. Too many people believe all the current nonsense about ‘market failure’ or the ‘failure of capitalism.’ Educational failure would be closer to the mark. The cause of the current financial panic is the many years of government interference in our businesses and private lives...

Experts predict hedge fund failures, panic

Hedge funds closures will eliminate about 30 percent of the industry, and policy makers may need to shut markets for a week or more to stem panic, according to presentations at an investor conference today in London. ‘In a fairly Darwinian manner, many hedge funds will simply disappear,” Emmanuel Roman, co-chief executive officer at GLG Partners Inc., told the Hedge 2008 conference in London...

Residents unite against proposed phone mast

Friday, October 24, 2008, 09:00

James Daly

KEMSING residents have come out in force to oppose plans to install a phone mast in the village.

Telefónica UK, on behalf of mobile phone giant O2, is on the verge of submitting a planning application for a 3G mast on a grass area on the corner of West End and Childsbridge Lane.

But Rod Wakefield, who runs the newsagents in Dynes Road, said many residents are opposed to the plans.

"I have lots of people coming in telling me about it and how much they don't want it," he said.

"People don't want a telephone mast right outside their front door."

Letters dated October 6 from O2 have been dropped through residents' doors giving them 14 days to make comments on the proposal before a planning application is made.

Wrecked Iraq: What the Good News From Iraq Really Means

Michael Schwartz, "Even before the spectacular presidential election campaign became a national obsession, and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression crowded out other news, coverage of the Iraq War had dwindled to next to nothing. National newspapers had long since discontinued their daily feasts of multiple - usually front page - reports on the country, replacing them with meager meals of mostly inside-the-fold summary stories. On broadcast and cable TV channels, where violence in Iraq had once been the nightly lead, whole news cycles went by without a mention of the war."
