Concern mounts over St Cross phone mast plan

6:20pm Thursday 9th October 2008

SCORES of Winchester residents turned out to voice their fears over a proposed phone mast on the tower of a historic church.

People in St Cross are worried about O2’s plans for the Grade I-listed Hospital of St Cross.

The phone company wants to improve coverage in the south Winchester area, and held a drop-in session on Tuesday evening, but it turned into a public meeting, with around 75 people attending.

One of them, mum-of-two Sarah Hampson, from St Cross, said: “The primary concerns are the proximity to St Faith’s school and the nursery.

ACLU: NSA Monitored Personal Conversations Of Innocent Americans, Report Says

Did US Government Snoop on Americans' Phone Calls?

Jonathan S. Landay, McClatchy Newspapers: "The Senate Intelligence Committee is examining allegations by two former U.S. military linguists that the super-secret National Security Agency routinely eavesdropped on the private telephone calls of American military officers, journalists and aid workers. NSA interceptors purportedly shared some intercepts of highly personal conversations, including 'phone sex.'"

Inside Account of U.S. Eavesdropping on Americans

Despite pledges by President George W. Bush and American intelligence officials to the contrary, hundreds of US citizens overseas have been eavesdropped on as they called friends and family back home, according to two former military intercept operators who worked at the giant National Security Agency (NSA) center in Fort Gordon, Georgia.

By Democracy Now!

Two influential congressional committees have opened probes into allegations US intelligence spied on the phone calls of American military personnel, journalists and aid workers in Iraq. We speak to James Bamford about the NSA's spying on Americans, the agency's failings pre-9/11 and the ties between NSA and the nation's telecommunications companies.

NSA Tapped 9/11 Hijackers' Phone Calls for 2 Years - Inside the U.S.

I've previously pointed out that the U.S. government heard the 9/11 plans from the hijackers' own mouth. Most of what I wrote about involved the NSA and other intelligence services tapping top Al Qaeda operatives' phone calls outside the U.S.

New mast plan sparks anger

Published Date: 09 October 2008

A PLAN for another mobile phone mast in Newmarket's Exning Road has got residents fuming.

Proposals for a 40ft tall Vodafone mast in Tannersfield Way, just 400 yards from a mast put up earlier this year by rival company 02 outside Newmarket Leisure Centre, were outlined to town councillors on Monday.

That mast caused an outcry after it was discovered that it had gone up as the result of a blunder by Forest Heath Council, which had failed to respond to notification about the plans within the statutory time limit.

No more stolen elections!

The Nation
by John Nichols

The 2000 presidential election was an in-broad-daylight assault on both the concept of democracy and its practice in the United States. Democrat Al Gore received 543,895 more votes nationwide than Republican George Bush. Unfortunately, because American presidential elections are not decided by the voters but by an antiquated and anti-democratic Electoral College, that didn’t mean much. Nor did it mean much that a clear plurality of voters in the contested state of Florida went to the polls with the intention of giving that state’s electoral votes to Gore, and with those electoral votes the presidency...

Bailout blues

FreedomWorks spent the better part of the past three weeks fighting against Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson’s idea to bail out struggling investment houses on Wall Street using $700 billion in taxpayers’ dollars. $700,000,000,000. That’s more that the annual GDP of Australia. With a proposal this big, and this bad, we pulled out all the stops to try to prevent this bill from harming the taxpayers. Some days we worked all night trying to defeat Paulson’s plan. Our members visited Congressional offices across the country, placed thousands of calls, and sent tens of thousands of petitions to Capitol Hill telling Congress to oppose this bill. As one of the few groups that stood strong on our principles, we made a difference...
