Bailout Isn't Just For Wall Street Anymore

RAND Lobbies Pentagon: Start War To Save U.S. Economy

AIG used billions from Fed but hasn't said for what

The American International Group is rapidly running through $123 billion in emergency lending provided by the Federal Reserve, raising questions about how a company claiming to be solvent in September could have developed such a big hole by October. Some analysts say at least part of the shortfall must have been there all along, hidden by irregular accounting.

Goldman Sachs ready to hand out £7bn salary and bonus package... after its £6bn bail-out

Each of the firm's 443 partners is on course to pocket an average Christmas bonus of more than £3million.

Taxpayers Could Cover Government Pension Shortfall

Illinois taxpayers may soon be called on to bail out what is arguably the best-funded public pension plan in the state thanks to $3.6 billion in fund losses caused by the spiraling economy.

Exxon Mobil posts biggest US quarterly profit ever

Exxon Mobil Corp., the world's largest publicly traded oil company, reported income Thursday that shattered its own record for the biggest profit from operations by a U.S. corporation, earning $14.83 billion in the third quarter.

Banks to Continue Paying Dividends

Binyamin Appelbaum, The Washington Post: "U.S. banks getting more than $163 billion from the Treasury Department for new lending are on pace to pay more than half of that sum to their shareholders, with government permission, over the next three years.... Critics, including economists and members of Congress, question why banks should get government money if they already have enough money to pay dividends - or conversely, why banks that need government money are still spending so much on dividends."

CIA allowed concealing torture documents

Chief Judge Royce Lamberth of the Washington D.C. Circuit Court declined to review torture allegations from men held in the CIA's prisons-because it could put the nation at risk of grave danger if allowed to be made public.

DOD and CIA Can Decide Which Laws They Like

The judge's reasoning highlighted one of the more disturbing aspects of the recent revelations that the Defense Dept., with the aid of the Justice Dept., likely tortured prisoners in violation of U.S. and international law.

Iraq opposes any clause letting US stay after 2011

Baghdad wants to delete any reference in a security pact with Washington to the possibility of US troops staying in Iraq after 2011, an MP close to Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said on Thursday.

US pact must guard Iraq sovereignty: top Shiite cleric

Top Iraqi Shiite cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani insists that the security pact being negotiated with Washington must not harm Iraq's sovereignty, his office said on Wednesday.

Senior Iraqi Leader Says Pact With U.S. Is Unlikely to Pass

The Bush administration has repeatedly said that the current draft of the agreement is the furthest that the United States is willing to go. "The bar to any revisions is very high," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said.

Iraq gov't wants all US troops gone by end of 2011

Those demands, which were presented to U.S. officials this week, could derail the deal - delivering a diplomatic blow to Washington in the final weeks of the Bush administration.

US's Syrian raid sets Iraq on fire

It came as such a surprise to Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki that he was completely dumfounded at commenting. Here was the prime minister of Iraq, an ally of Iran and a former resident of Syria, watching Syria being attacked from his own territory - without his knowledge.

McCain Racism, Hypocrisy on Khalidi Issue

This Is The Lowest McCain Has Sunk Yet.

McCain's and Palin's attacks on Khalidi are frankly racist. He is a distinguished scholar, and the only objectionable thing about him from a rightwing point of view is that he is a Palestinian.

Conservatives have long smeared their opponents as unpatriotic. Such divisive rhetoric brings out the worst in America.

Paulson Swindle Revealed — The swindle of American taxpayers is proceeding more or less in broad daylight, as the unwitting voters are preoccupied with the national election. Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson agreed to invest $125 billion in the nine largest banks, including $10 billion for Goldman Sachs, his old firm. But, if you look more closely at Paulson's transaction, the taxpayers were taken for a ride — a very expensive ride.

Paulson the Bungler

By Mike Whitney

There's more pain to come, but the suffering can be mitigated by sound decision-making and Keynesian policies. That means public work programs, bankruptcy reform, and extensions on unemployment. Nobel prize winner Paul Krugman recommends a stimulus package of $600 billion. That's a good start, but it will take much more than that.

More Than 30,000 Registered Coloradans Barred From Voting

Naomi Zeveloff, The Colorado Independent: "Thousands of Coloradans have been denied the right to vote because of a policy that may violate federal law. Colorado Secretary of State Mike Coffman has authorized county clerks to purge newly registered voters under the so-called 20-day rule. Here, county clerks must send non-forwardable letters to newly registered voters. If the mail bounces back to the clerks, then they must remove the voter applicants' names from the rolls. Voting rights advocates say that the policy violates the 1965 National Voting Rights Act."

Cold War Spy Case Offers Lessons for Today

Marcia Mitchell, Truthout: "New allegations of illegal eavesdropping have put the NSA once again on the political hot seat. This time, for listening in on phone calls made by American military and humanitarian workers. Hardly a surprise, given the agency's history of disregard for the laws that govern who listens to whom and for what purpose. No surprise either that former NSA head Michael Hayden, now director of the CIA, insists that charges of agency lawbreaking are 'ridiculous.'"

Millions of Iraqis at Risk from Contaminated Water, Says Red Cross

Angela Balakrishnan, The Guardian UK: "Improved security has failed to prevent Iraq becoming the scene of one of the world's most critical humanitarian disasters with water supplies and sewage systems putting millions at risk of disease, the Red Cross said today. The statement from the International Committee of the Red Cross said the situation has not improved significantly since March this year when the organization published its report, Iraq: No Let-up in The Humanitarian Crisis."

Sea-Level Rise Threatens Sydney Coast

Marian Wilkinson and Ben Cubby, The Sydney Morning Herald: "Sydney's iconic beaches, coastal houses, commercial property and roads will be threatened by rising sea levels by 2050, while the city's temperature is expected to rise by at least two degrees, a new scientific study, launched by the Premier, Nathan Rees, reveals. The study finds that bushfires are likely to be more intense while rainfall may become more erratic, creating water shortages. But while winter rains decline, intense summer rain in parts of Sydney could increase flash flooding."

Appeals Courts Pushed to Right by Bush Choices

Charlie Savage, The New York Times: "Mr. Bush had appointed six of the seven judges in the conservative majority. His administration has transformed the nation's federal appeals courts, advancing a conservative legal revolution that began nearly three decades ago under President Ronald Reagan."

Lieberman Likely to Lose His Gavel in Massive Reshuffle Being Discussed

J. Taylor Rushing, The Hill: "Democratic leaders are discussing a major reshuffling of Senate committee chairmanships, according to multiple sources, and the proposed changes include ousting Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Connecticut) from his coveted chairmanship. Lieberman, a former Democrat who supports Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) for president, is likely to lose his gavel on the Homeland Security Committee he has chaired since January 2007, say the sources who see him being replaced by Sen. Daniel Akaka (Hawaii), the committee's third-ranking Democrat."

Pakistan Protests US Attacks Within Its Borders

"Let's make MONEY"

"Let's make MONEY" folgt dem Weg unseres Geldes, dorthin wo spanische Bauarbeiter, afrikanische Bauern oder indische Arbeiter unser Geld vermehren und selbst bettelarm bleiben. Nach "We feed the world" der neue Film von Erwin Wagenhofer.
