The era of American dominance is over

A Better Bailout

State capitalism in crisis

Foundation for Economic Education
by Sheldon Richman

Let’s take a bird’s-eye view of what the Bush administration, with congressional complicity, proposes to do about the financial problems. The administration wants the authority to spend a minimum of $700 billion buying, among other things, bad mortgage loans — loans no one else will buy — from solvent banks and other institutions. The draft of this extraordinary measure contains this extraordinary provision: ‘Decisions by the [Treasury] Secretary pursuant to the authority of this Act are non-reviewable and committed to agency discretion, and may not be reviewed by any court of law or any administrative agency’...

Families now in fight against two masts

28 September 2008 13:00

Families urged to fight one mobile phone mast on their doorstep now have another one to beat off - just 20m away.

Earlier this month, calls were made for people to oppose proposals for a 12m Orange mobile phone mast at junction of Earlham Green Lane and Cunningham Road in Earlham.

But it has now emerged that Vodafone wants to install a 12m high imitation telegraph pole about 20m away, close to the junction of Earlham Green Lane and Cunningham Road, and a planning application has already been submitted to Norwich City Council.

A Freddie Mac Money Trail Catches Up With McCain

Michael Isikoff and Holly Bailey, Newsweek: "Few advisers in John McCain's inner circle inspire more loyalty from him than campaign manager Rick Davis. McCain and his wife, Cindy, credit the shrewd, and sometimes volatile, Republican insider with rescuing the campaign last year when it was out of money and on the verge of collapse. As a result, McCain has always defended him - even when faced with tough questions about the foreign lobbying clients of Davis's high-powered consulting firm. 'Rick is a friend, and I trust him,' McCain told NEWSWEEK last year."

McCain's Suspension Bridge to Nowhere

Frank Rich, The New York Times: "What we learned last week is that the man who always puts his 'country first' will take the country down with him if that's what it takes to get to the White House. For all the focus on Friday night's deadlocked debate, it still can't obscure what preceded it: When John McCain gratuitously parachuted into Washington on Thursday, he didn't care if his grandstanding might precipitate an even deeper economic collapse. All he cared about was whether he might save his campaign."

U.S.: Soldiers Tell of Detainee Abuse in Iraq

Torture and other abuses against detainees in U.S. custody in Iraq were authorized and routine, even after the 2004 Abu Ghraib scandal, according to new accounts from soldiers in a Human Rights Watch report released today.

Contractor says immune from Iraq torture lawsuits

Defense contractor CACI (KA'-kee) claims it should be immune from lawsuits alleging torture at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, saying it was doing the U.S. government's work as a supplier of interrogators.

The question is: Can Palin give a coherent answer?

Even as members of the American media strive to avoid appearing snobbish or elitist in their treatment of Mrs Palin, most commentators seemed unable to disguise their sheer consternation at a performance that at times seemed worthy less of a candidate for vice-president than for school president.

Trouble in Banktopia

The financial system is blowing up. Don't listen to the experts; just look at the numbers.

By Mike Whitney

The carnage from Greenspan's low interest rate, "easy money" binge is now visible everywhere. Inflated home and stock values are crashing as the gas continues to escape from the massive equity bubble. The FDIC will have to be recapitalized--perhaps, $500 billion--to account for the anticipated loss of deposits from failing banks caught in the cross-hairs of asset-deflation and steadily contracting credit.

$700 billion or Armageddon? Sounds like sci-fi

Put $700 billion in the bag and no one gets hurt.

By Ken Kam

The more I hear about Henry Paulson's plan, the less convinced I am it's worth $2,000 from every American. The predictions of financial Armageddon without it don't ring true.

The End of Voodoo Economics

By Ian Williams

No one can say that current events are a one-off. The get-government-out-of-business brigade, the masters of the universe, have in their three decades of unbridled power produced the savings and loan bail-out, the Mexican bond bail-out, the Asian currency crisis, the Enron and other related scandals, the tech bubble, the Long-Term Capital Management collapse and rescue, a wage freeze for working Americans and now this.

Tragedy in the Making in Washington and on Wall Street

The Canadian Solution

By Rodrigue Tremblay

This is something that the Bush administration and the U.S. Congress might want to consider if they hope to get out of the ideological and political deadlock they have talked themselves into.

Keating 5 Ring a Bell?

McCain's past collides with the present Wall Street debacle.

By Rosa Brooks

Once upon a time, a politician took campaign contributions and favors from a friendly constituent who happened to run a savings and loan association. The contributions were generous: They came to about $200,000 in today's dollars, and on top of that there were several free vacations for the politician and his family, along with private jet trips and other perks.

Watch this video and hear these exact words from Rep Michael Burgess 26th District of Texas:

"Mr. Speaker I understand that we are under martial law, as declared by the Speaker last night!"

Apparently, inside the halls of Congress, martial law has already been declared.

Gastkommentar Alfred T. Ritter
