Bailout Could Deepen Crisis, CBO Chief Says

Frank Ahrens, The Washington Post: "The director of the Congressional Budget Office said yesterday that the proposed Wall Street bailout could actually worsen the current financial crisis. During testimony before the House Budget Committee, Peter R. Orszag - Congress's top bookkeeper - said the bailout could expose the way companies are stowing toxic assets on their books, leading to greater problems."

Reviving National Service in a Big Way

William J. Astore, "... Amazingly enough, ordinary Americans generally don't want bail-outs, nor do they want handouts. What they normally want is honorable work, decent wages, and a government willing to wake up and help them contribute to a national restoration."

McCain Aide's Firm Was Paid by Freddie Mac

Jackie Calmes and David D. Kirkpatrick, The New York Times: "One of the giant mortgage companies at the heart of the credit crisis paid $15,000 a month from the end of 2005 through last month to a firm owned by Senator John McCain's campaign manager, according to two people with direct knowledge of the arrangement. The disclosure undercuts a statement by Mr. McCain on Sunday night that the campaign manager, Rick Davis, had had no involvement with the company for the last several years."

Encrypting against Homeland Security’s new laptop search policy

Market Watch

The Department of Homeland Security will now be allowed to confiscate laptops coming into the U.S. for an indefinite amount of time. Customs and Border Patrol will be able to search laptops or any other electronic device, download entire contents and keep the device for several days. …. Some experts suggest simply leaving electronics, such as laptops and PDAs, at home. While this strategy is easy enough for someone heading off on vacation, business travelers need more practical options to protect sensitive information. According to Brenzel, encryption is key to data protection...

Goldman Sachs Socialism

By William Greider

Wall Street put a gun to the head of the politicians and said, give us the money--right now--or take the blame for whatever follows. The audacity of Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson's bailout proposal is reflected in what it refuses to say: no explanations of how the bailout will work, no demands on the bankers in exchange for the public's money. The Treasury's opaque, three-page summary of plan includes this chilling statement...

Forbes publishes list of 400 wealthiest Americans

By Tom Eley

The recently released Forbes 400 list of the richest Americans shows that the combined wealth of the aristocracy has increased 2 percent, even amidst the financial breakdown and recession of the economy. "In this, the 27th edition of the list," Forbes glumly notes, "the assembled net worth of America's wealthiest rose by $30 billion-only 2%-to $1.57 trillion."

There is a man running for president who actually believes -- right now -- that deregulation has been a great thing for the U-S economy... He has surrounded himself with lobbyists who made millions pushing for the regulatory changes that facilitated the current crisis... And he thinks that deregulation of the banking industry has been so great... we should do the exact same thing with -- make that "to" -- health care.

Bush Withholds Salmon Disaster Money as He Pushes for Corporate Bailouts

Dan Bacher, Truthout: "While George W. Bush wants taxpayers to give Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson a $700 billion blank check to bail out Wall Street for its reckless speculation and greed, the administration announced last week that it would release only $100 million of the $170 million appropriated to salmon fishermen and businesses impacted by this year's salmon fishing closure off the California and Oregon coasts and in Central Valley rivers."

Is Your Vote Safe?

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Ring of Fire: "There are about 30 scams the Republicans are deliberately using, particularly in the swing states to get Democratic voters off the rolls. These scams originate in the so-called Help America Vote Act, which was passed after the Florida debacle in the year 2000. It was originally suggested by Democrats and Republicans, but it was passed by a Republican Congress with a Republican Senate and a Republican president. And instead of reforming what happened in Florida, it basically institutionalized all the problems that happened in Florida."

First Fear, Then Loathing, Toward Wall Street

Allison Linn, "As Americans digest a dizzying series of events that has left Wall Street shaken to its core, the mood on Main Street is shifting from fear to loathing. They are angry that government regulators did not do enough to prevent this - and protect them - in the first place. They are upset the government is proposing billions of dollars in bailouts for Wall Street, even as many regular Americans are struggling to hang onto their homes and pay their bills."

Phone mast fiasco blamed on postal delay

September 24, 2008, 00:00

A PHONE mast has gone up unopposed because a council claims it was "let down by the postal system."

The 15m high telephone mast was erected in Beeching Way in July this year after mobile phone giants O2 received a refusal letter two days later than a regulation deadline.

Mid Sussex District Council decided to refuse permission for the erection of the mast back in March and a notice was sent to O2 on March 6.

But O2 says it didn't receive the letter until March 12, two days after a 56 day decision period expired.

The company has now erected the mast at the junction of Beeching Way and Lewes Road, and there is nothing the council can do.
