Second Stimulus Needed to Create Jobs and Revive Our Economy

Michael Ettlinger and David Madland, The Center for American Progress: "With 605,000 jobs lost so far this year and an unemployment rate topping 6 percent, the U.S. economy-and especially its labor market-needs another shot in the arm. The economic stimulus package passed in February gave the economy a helpful prod and staved off an economic contraction over the summer. The Treasury Department and Federal Reserve are intervening in financial markets on a massive scale to hold off a complete collapse wrought by their own and other agencies' incompetent supervision of Wall Street business practices. But other stimulus measures are needed as well."

Bill to ban secret law-changes introduced

Raw Story

The Bush administration’s practice of relying on classified legal ‘opinions’ from the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Council to reinterpret laws to mean whatever the president needs them to mean has produced such gems as ‘extraordinary rendition’ and ‘enhanced interrogation.’ With George W. Bush just a few short months from returning to his Texas ranch full time, two Democratic lawmakers have introduced legislation that would prevent the White House’s next occupant from engaging in similar efforts to rewrite the law...

Washington’s false logic of torture

by Ron Jacobs

Logic is a process whereby one makes an argument based on a premise. If the premise is false, the process of logic can still prove it, albeit possibly not as easily or convincingly as a true premise. Law follows the process of logic in deciding human guilt or innocence. However, law has fewer false premises since most laws and their application are based on previous experiences with said law. As Michael Ratner of the Center for Constitutional Rights makes clear in his book The Trial of Donald Rumsfeld, the legal rationalization for the US torture of its prisoners is based on a false premise...

Official: U.S. considering new steps against Russia

The United States is considering to take further actions against Russia after the latter's invasion of Georgia, Under Secretary of State William Burns said here Wednesday.

"Bullying" Russia must be stopped: Condoleezza Rice

The West must stand up to "bullying" by Moscow and keep Russia from benefiting from its military move into Georgia, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said in a harshly-worded speech on Friday.

The hypocrisy of the West

The dominant Western politicians and media are describing the conflict in Georgia without considering the responsibility of the US and NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) for unleashing the crisis.

America and China Joined at the Hip

With the government now having spent over $800 billion in less than a year shoring up tottering financial companies that had become little more than casinos (and rigged ones at that), America is looking increasingly like China, a country where the state has been gradually getting out of the business of directly owning companies.

The Meaning of the Collapse of Lehman Brothers

By Sam Marcy

The following article, written by Workers World Party chairperson Sam Marcy in the April 26, 1984, issue, holds tremendous lessons today as a growing number of Wall Street firms are collapsing with no end in sight. The root cause of the Lehman Brothers' crisis 24 years ago was attributed to its merger with Shearson/American Express.

On Ethics, Deregulation and Financial Chaos

By William A. Cohn

US government policy has encouraged recklessness - most recently by taking extraordinary measures to privatize gains while socializing losses. As part of the agenda of its so-called ownership society (excepting ownership of responsibility by powerful bankers and insurers who fail) the govt. even sought to privatize public obligations - recall the Bush proposal to privatize social security. So why not play fast and loose if the rules are heads I win tails you lose?

You've Been "Shafted" (Again)

By Larry Dorshkind

The ultimate tax obligation of your family figure is humongous? Just to give you a little sense of the scale, though, the present $9.5 trillion National Debt works out to be $38,000 per person (based on 250,000 Americans who can be expected to pay taxes). Therefore, for your 6-member family unit, your obligation for the current National Debt is $228,000.

The MSM Jumps on the Economic Bandwagon

By Kathy Sanborn

So the US economy is on the brink? Yawn. Tell me something I didn't know at least two years ago. Now the mainstream media have been given the green light to announce, bold as you please, that we are in for some pretty tough times, but Internet news and blog readers have known about our faltering financial system for a long, long time. Now, in the mainstream press, it has become popular to state the obvious: the country is broke.

Corporations Not Paying Income Tax

Two out of every three United States corporations paid no federal income taxes from 1998 through 2005, according to a report released Tuesday by the Government Accountability Office, the investigative arm of Congress.

Senate Passes $612 bln Defense Spending Bill

By Jim Wolf

The U.S. Senate on Wednesday overwhelmingly approved a $612.5 billion defense spending bill for fiscal 2009, including $70 billion for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. As passed on an 88-8 vote, the measure would authorize $103.9 billion for Pentagon procurement, $1.2 billion more than President George W. Bush's request. Overall, Bush had asked for $611.1 billion for national defense.

The Point of No Return

Neither China nor the Saudi princes are buying any more failing investment banks. They'll leave that to the US taxpayer.

Grasping at Straws

By Mike Whitney

If Paulson is not removed and his rescue plan scrapped altogether; the dollar will lose its position as the world's reserve currency and the US government will face a historic funding crisis as foreign sources of capital dry up. That will thrust the country into a hyper-inflationary depression.

What does Sarah Palin have to hide in her e-mails?

Palin’s husband refuses to testify in probe

Arizona Republic

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s husband has refused to testify in the investigation of his wife’s alleged abuse of power, and key lawmakers said Thursday that uncooperative witnesses are effectively sidetracking the probe until after Election Day. Todd Palin, who participates in state business in person or by e-mail, was among 13 people subpoenaed by the Alaska Legislature. Palin’s lawyer sent a letter to the lead investigator saying Palin objected to the probe and would not appear to testify on Friday...

Palin Can Launch Us Back in Time

Janis L. Karpinski, Truthout: "Hmmmmm. My intuition is kicking into high gear on the nomination of Sarah Palin as vice president on the Republican ticket. Hmmmmm. It is haunting me. There is something sneaky behind her and me thinks it is the devious orchestration of Karl Rove. Months of criticism for Barack Obama's allegedly short supply of expertise, then McCain selects a true novice as a partner on his ticket. Does this make any sense at all?"

A Spaniard in the Works

Oliver Burkeman, The Guardian UK: "Does John McCain know that Zapatero is the Spanish prime minister, and that Spain is in Europe? You'll have to decide for yourself whether the painful interview above, which John McCain gave yesterday to a Spanish journalist in Florida, really does seem to indicate that he didn't know that Jose Luis Zapatero is the prime minister of Spain, and that he perhaps even thinks Spain might be in Latin America."

Mobilfunk: Gemeinde Aßling setzt deutliches Signal

Marianne Buchmann 14.09.08

Gerd Oberfeld, Salzburg
(Vorkämpfer für den "Salzburger Vorsorgewert")

Dipl.-Ing. Hans Ulrich-Raithel, Umweltinstitut München (Technischer Berater der Gemeinde bei der Standortplanung)

Rechtsanwalt Frank Sommer, München
(Rechtsbeistand der Gemeinde Aßling)

Die Moderation übernimmt Werner Lampl, 1. Bürgermeister der Gemeinde Aßling.

Voter Database Glitches Could Disenfranchise Thousands

Kim Zetter, "Electronic voting machines have been the focus of much controversy the last few years. But another election technology has received little scrutiny, yet could create numerous problems and disenfranchise thousands of voters in November, election experts say."

Bush's Continued Assault on Scientific Integrity

Chris Mooney, Mother Jones: "If the Bush administration had consciously plotted to leave office with one last jab at American scientists, it could hardly have done better than the North Atlantic right whale incident. This fish tale has everything: attacks on science, appeasement of special interests, delays in government action - even a cameo by Moby Dick Cheney."

How John McCain Lost Me

Elizabeth Drew, "While McCain's movement to the center was widely popular (if not on the right) - and he even flirted with becoming a Democrat - there's now strong reason to question whether it was anything but a temporary, expedient tactic."
