The New Obscurantism

Fabien Deglise, Le Devoir: "A foul time for thinkers. Major scientific data distributed on the sly, legal suits designed to silence critical minds, troublesome bureaucrats fired, muzzling of scientific researchers in politically incorrect venues, publicized condemnation of intellectuals who don't toe the party line ..."

Exit Bush, Far Right

Dave Mann, The Texas Observer: "It sometimes feels as though George W. Bush has been president forever. Everyone from the voters to the media to even Bush himself seems long past ready for his administration to end. With the presidential campaign in full swing, Bush has receded as far from public view as a president conceivably can-save for frolicking with America’s Olympic beach volleyball players."

New President Will Inherit $438 Billion Debt

Lori Montgomery, The Washington Post: "Weak revenue growth and accelerated spending - including an economic stimulus package that returned billions to taxpayers - will drive the federal deficit to $407 billion in the fiscal year that ends this month, more than double last year's $161 billion, congressional budget analysts reported today."

Protest over plans for ‘horrible’ mast

By Chris Carson

PLANS to site a 30ft high mobile phone mast on the approach to a woodland beauty spot in Bridport have angered both councillors and residents.

Vodafone wants to put up the timber pole with three antennae, along with an equipment cabinet, at Old Hospital Field, Park Road.

Town councillors this week lodged a formal objection, saying it would mar the approach to Allington Hill, a popular local walk.

Bush's push for unipolarism and its failure

Bin Laden's aims with 9/11 and Bush's in Iraq

By John Pedler

Report expaining what bin Laden's aims were with 9/11, and what G W Bush and the Cheney neo-cons hoped to achieve with the invasion of Iraq. Ignorance about this is astounding - yet knowing this is essential to understanding how GW Bush's push for unipolarism and its failure lies at the root of both America's international and financial disasters.

Empire and Imperialism and the USA

By James Petras

The world of competing imperial countries has created complex international organizations, which conflict, compete and collaborate. They operate on all levels, from the global to the cities and villages of the Third World. Imperialist powers enter and exploit through a chain of collaborator classes from the imperial center through international organizations to local ruling, economic and political classes.

The Voice of War and Oil

By Rand Clifford

After years of America recruiting former Soviet Republics as client states, raking in vast profits from their militarization, and profiting on oil considerations, Russia has finally drawn the line.

American Socialism

US Is "More Communist than China": Jim Rogers

"This is madness, this is insanity, they have more than doubled the American national debt in one weekend for a bunch of crooks and incompetents. I'm not quite sure why I or anybody else should be paying for this," Rogers told "Squawk Box Europe."

Comrades Bush, Paulson and Bernanke Welcome You to the USSRA
(United Socialist State Republic of America)

By Nouriel Roubini

Socialism is indeed alive and well in America; but this is socialism for the rich, the well connected and Wall Street. A socialism where profits are privatized and losses are socialized with the US tax-payer being charged the bill of $300 billion.

Republicans Born Again

By Eric Margolis

Palin's emergence simply confirms the final dumbing down and ruralization of the Republican Party, and its metamorphosis into a right wing politico-religious movement.

Storm Troopers at the RNC

By Ray McGovern

Ten days ago, as the nation focused attention on the hurricane nearing the Mississippi delta, another storm was brewing far upstream in St. Paul, Minnesota - a storm far more dangerous, it turned out, but one by and large overlooked by the Fawning Corporate Media (FCM).

Sarah Palin: A big boon for Big Oil

Mother Jones
by James Ridgeway

Alaska once boasted genuine political mavericks like Democratic senators Ernest Gruening and Mike Gravel, but they long ago gave way to right-wing Republican pork-barrelers with close ties to the oil and gas industry, like Sen. Ted Stevens and Congressman Don Young. Both championed the Alyeska Trans-Alaskan pipeline that connects Prudhoe Bay on Alaska’s north coast to Valdez in the south, the source of countless spills over its 30-year history; both support drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR); and both are longtime climate-change skeptics. … Palin has at times sought to separate herself from these political veterans on ethical grounds, though between 2003 and 2005 she served as a director of a 527 group organized by Stevens. (Both congressmen have been investigated — and Stevens is now under federal indictment — for dealings with Veco, an oil services company.) She has even won kudos for ‘taking on the oil companies’ over state control and state taxes on the industry. But when it comes to core energy policy, she is up to her neck in the same barrel of oil as her fellow Alaska Republicans...

Ten Ways the GOP Is Now Stealing the Ohio Vote

Bob Fitrakis and Harvey Wasserman, The Free Press: "The McCain/Palin GOP is already in the process of stealing the Ohio vote, as was done in 2004. Among those at the center of the GOP strategy is Bush family computer operative Michael Connell, who programmed the key vote-counting mechanisms that were used to give George W. Bush his second term."
