House Panel Votes to Cite Rove for Contempt

Laurie Kellman, of The Associated Press: "A House panel Wednesday voted to cite former top White House aide Karl Rove for contempt of Congress as its Senate counterpart publicly pursued possible punishments for an array of alleged past and present Bush administration misdeeds. Voting along party lines, the House Judiciary Committee said that Rove had broke the law by failing to appear at a July 10 hearing on allegations of White House influence over the Justice Department, including whether Rove encouraged prosecutions against Democrats."

War Meets Values on Campaign Trail

Ira Chernus for TomDispatch.com: "Pundits and activists who oppose the war in Iraq generally assume that the issue has to work against McCain because they treat American politics as if it were a college classroom full of rational truth-seekers. The reality is much more like a theatrical spectacle. Symbolism and the emotion it evokes -- not facts and logic -- rule the day."

Fallon Reemerges to Speak Out on Iran

In The Washington Independent, Spencer Ackerman reports: "In a roundtable Tuesday, Adm. William 'Fox' Fallon, the former commander of U.S. forces in the Middle East ousted for dissenting from the Bush administration's bellicose posture toward Iran, gave a rare public elaboration of his view of multilateral cooperation for security in the region. In one of his first public appearances after his abrupt departure as head of U.S. Central Command, Fallon said at the National Press Club that Gulf countries 'clearly recognize that the U.S. plays a strong leadership role,' and desire that to continue. Further, they ask the U.S. 'to be active' in the region -- though part of being active, he said, included the advice 'don't start a war' with Iran."

Obama and McCain as neo-neocons

Christian Science Monitor
by staff

07/30/08

On one issue –- who’d be tougher on Al Qaeda -– John McCain and Barack Obama are one-upping each other in rhetoric. It’s a risky dynamic and may be giving a green light to the current president. Just before President Bush met Pakistan’s new prime minister Monday, the US conducted an attack on Al Qaeda -– inside Pakistan. The unilateral airstrike by an unmanned drone allegedly killed Al Qaeda’s leading expert on chemical and biological weapons, Abu Khabab al-Masri. The result may be difficult to argue against but this US violation of Pakistani sovereignty was criticized by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani and perhaps most Pakistanis who cherish their recent return to full democracy...

If you don't want a phone mast, pay for restoration

09:04 - 30 July 2008

YOU reported (July 23) that a St Ives football club turned down an approach from a mobile phone company to erect a mast on one of its floodlights.

A while ago, a mobile phone company also asked All Saints' Church in Hartford if it could install a mast within its tower in exchange for a substantial annual fee.

The parochial church council consulted widely with people living in the area. Some of those consulted voiced concerns regarding health issues, although the PCC had confidence in the scientific evidence that there was no health threat. Recently, another request has been made to use the tower and the financial offer has been increased.

The Systematic Destruction of Voting Rights in America

Part 1

Heidi Stevenson, Natural News: "You might think you have the right to vote. You might think your vote counts. You might think that there's a problem here or there, but that they're the exceptions. You might think that the 2000 presidential election was an aberration, in which the US Supreme Court violated ethical and court precedents to crown the election loser, countering the will of the people. You might think it can't possibly be an ongoing problem. You might be very sadly mistaken."

Part 2: Lack of Transparency

Heidi Stevenson, Truthout: "It is not enough to have the right to vote. The people also need to know that their votes are counted in an open and fair manner. Without that transparency, there is no way to be sure that an election was fair or that one's vote mattered. The result of that lack is a people who have no faith in their government, who cannot trust that members of the legislature or any administration position truly respond to them. There can be no assumption that the government is supported by its citizens."

Save The Planet? How About Saving The Republic?

by Chuck Baldwin

Yesterday, the Politico quoted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as saying, "I'm trying to save the planet; I'm trying to save the planet." She was responding, of course, to pressure that she and her fellow Democrats are experiencing to suspend a congressional ban on offshore oil drilling in the face of skyrocketing energy prices. It would be really wonderful, however, if the liberal congresswoman could get as energized about saving our once great republic........
