New bid for phone mast in Green

3:40pm Friday 1st August 2008

A CONTROVERSIAL bid to build a new mobile phone mast in Barnards Green is back on the cards.

Mobile giant 02 has submitted an application to Malvern Hills District Council to put up a 12.5m mast with three antennas on the Six Ways Industrial Estate, in Barnards Green Road.

The mast would be made to look like a telegraph pole, and require an equipment cabinet nearby.

An application by O2 for a 15m mast on the same site in 2006 was refused after members of the public raised concerns over then visual impact, and the possible harmful effects from radiation.

Guantanamo Military Trials: Hamdan Defense Session Held in Secret

William Glaberson reports for The New York Times from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba: "After military prosecutors rested their case against Osama bin Laden's former driver, the military judge on Thursday closed the courtroom to the news media and other observers for the first time so the tribunal could hear defense testimony in secret."

For White House, Hiring Is Political

Charlie Savage, The New York Times: "On May 17, 2005, the White House's political affairs office sent an e-mail message to agencies throughout the executive branch directing them to find jobs for 108 people on a list of 'priority candidates' who had 'loyally served the president.' 'We simply want to place as many of our Bush loyalists as possible,' the White House emphasized in a follow-up message, according to a little-noticed passage of a Justice Department report released Monday about politicization in the department's hiring of civil-service prosecutors and immigration officials."

Schutz von Bürgerrechten muss Priorität haben

1. August 2008

Die Partei DIE LINKE unterstützt die Demonstration "Freiheit statt Angst - Stoppt den Überwachungswahn!" am 11. Oktober 2008 in Berlin.

Economic free fall?

The Nation
by William Greider

Washington can act with breathtaking urgency when the right people want something done. In this case, the people are Wall Street’s titans, who are scared witless at the prospect of their historic implosion. Congress quickly agreed to enact a gargantuan bailout, with more to come, to calm the anxieties and halt the deflation of Wall Street giants. Put aside partisan bickering, no time for hearings, no need to think through the deeper implications. We haven’t seen ‘bipartisan cooperation’ like this since Washington decided to invade Iraq...

Cheney pondered military scam to provoke Iran war

Think Progress

Speaking at the Campus Progress journalism conference earlier this month, Seymour Hersh — a Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist for The New Yorker — revealed that Bush administration officials held a meeting recently in the Vice President’s office to discuss ways to provoke a war with Iran. … Hersh explained that, during the meeting in Cheney’s office, an idea was considered to dress up Navy Seals as Iranians, put them on fake Iranian speedboats, and shoot at them. This idea, intended to provoke an Iran war, was ultimately rejected...

Voter Laws Need Reform, Groups Say

Haider Rizvi, Inter Press Service: "One of her sons is serving in the US Army in Iraq while another who has just turned 18 is about to join the Navy. Yet despite being a mother of two US soldiers, Annette McWashington Pruitt cannot cast her ballot in the upcoming presidential polls because the laws in her home state of Alabama do not allow ex-felons to participate in elections."

US Troops Kill Three Iraqi Civilians

Nusayf Jassim, a resident on Samarra, 125 kilometers north of Baghdad, told AFP that U.S. soldiers had raided his home in search of insurgents and in the ensuing gunfire his mother and two brothers were killed.

America's Leaders Violated One of the Commandments

By Andrew Greeley

June Mayer's carefully documented book The Dark Side demonstrates beyond doubt that the president, the vice president, the director of the CIA and their closest aides are war criminals. They violated international law, they violated American law, and they violated natural law.

Bush's Fierce Global War of Denial

Living Through the Age of Denial in America

Tom Engelhardt, "The message of 9/11 was, in truth, clear enough - quite outside the issue of who was delivering it for what purpose. It was: Here is the future of the United States; try as you might, like it or not, you are about to become part of the painful, modern history of this planet. And the irony that went with it was this: The fiercer the response, the more we tried to force the cost of denial of this central reality on others, the faster history - that grim shadow story of the Cold War era - seemed to approach."
