McCain Economic Policy Shaped by Lobbyist

Jonathan Larsen reports for MSNBC News: "Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain's national campaign general co-chair was being paid by a Swiss bank to lobby Congress about the US mortgage crisis at the same time he was advising McCain about his economic policy, federal records show ... lobbying disclosure forms, filed by the giant Swiss bank UBS, list McCain's campaign co-chair, former Texas Sen. Phil Gramm, as a lobbyist dealing specifically with legislation regarding the mortgage crisis as recently as December 31, 2007."

The Real Legacy of the "Reagan Revolution"

Robert Scheer, for Truthdig, writes: "McCain campaign co-chair Phil Gramm is right: We have 'become a nation of whiners.' But who is whining more than the bankers that former Sen. Gramm's financial deregulation legislation benefited? The very bankers who now expect a government bailout, such as those at UBS Investment Bank, where Gramm found lucrative employment."

What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington's Culture of Deception

Former White House Press Aide: Bush Misled US on Iraq

Michael D. Shear reports for The Washington Post: "Former White House press secretary Scott McClellan writes in a new memoir that the Iraq war was sold to the American people with a sophisticated 'political propaganda campaign' led by President Bush and aimed at 'manipulating sources of public opinion' and 'downplaying the major reason for going to war.'"

Bush aide scores White House war propaganda

The Nation
by John Nichols

05/28/08

The Bush administration employed propaganda techniques, political spin and deception to promote and then justify a war with Iraq that was unwise and unnecessary. And a ‘too-deferential’ national press corps allowed the president and his aides to get away with it. Who makes this devastating, if not entirely new, charge? The man responsible for spinning the story of the Bush presidency, former White House spokesman Scott McClellan. In a memoir that will be published Monday, What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington’s Culture of Deception, the veteran campaign and White House aide to George W. Bush portrays his former boss and those around him as permanent campaigners who frequently sacrificed the good of the country to achieve dubious political and policy goals....

Imagine a President who …

San Francisco Chronicle
by Jon Carroll

05/27/08

The incoming president will have about 1 million problems to solve. Some of them will require political courage; some of them will require creative thinking; some of them will require delicate diplomacy, and some of them will require strong-arm tactics. Knowing which problems require which solutions is what makes an effective executive. Of course, if said executive also agrees with me, clearly we’re in the presence of greatness. But there are issues that are apparently utterly resistant to change because they have been demagogued to death, and there seems to be no way to undemagogue them. Polls indicate that the American people are way ahead of their legislators on these topics, but the perceived political risk of confronting them is just too great. So they languish, injustices continue to occur, and hopelessness descends...

Hillary Clinton: Please exit, with dignity

Check out CNN.com for Bill Clinton’s vent about how a ‘cover up’ is hurting Hillary Clinton’s chances of becoming the Democratic nominee. This is a man who has trampled on his spouse’s voice every time, in this campaign, that she’s found it. The women of The Nation are the first to deplore the sexism in media commentary this primary season, but a ‘cover up’? Hillary Clinton started this race last year as the one to beat — she had the money, the machine and the name recognition that assured her of quasi-incumbent status. And, indeed, she ran as a quasi-incumbent, an establishment candidate in a change-year election. Yes, there were the Chris Matthews and the Tucker Carlsons and the Mike Barnicles and the Rush Limbaughs and the women who were working out their Clinton hatred through Hillary’s candidacy...

Aktuelle Forschungsarbeiten stützen Stücks Bedenken zumindest in Einzelfällen.

Call for ban on oil speculation

Germany in call for ban on oil speculation

Time to do something about oil

The oil price rise of more than US$50 per barrel since the US Federal Reserve started cutting interest rates in September is beginning to get serious. Since the rise of oil import prices alone removes $170 billion from the US economy, more than 1% of gross domestic product, it is both inflationary and highly recession-producing, especially since it has been accompanied by similar rises in other commodity prices. Its full effects have not been seen yet but they're coming - don't worry!
