Low-Income Renters to Pay for Housing Bailout

Dean Baker writes for Truthout: "Just to remind everyone of where things stand, Congress was wrestling with the situation of several million low- and moderate-income families, who are facing foreclosures on their homes. [And now] Congress wants to take away money from low-income renters to help bankers that made bad loans in the housing bubble."

India Strengthens Regulations Against Cell Phone Towers

Re: India Strengthens Regulations Against Cell Phone Towers

"The base station antennas should be at least *3 metres away from the nearby building*…. Access to (such) sites should be prohibited," states the guideline, which also calls for warning signs to be put up near the towers.

Wow 3 meters! That will for sure protect people! I'd recommend at least
300000 meters as safe distance.

VA Struggles to Gear Up to Care for Female Veterans

Les Blumenthal, of McClatchy Newspapers: "Two nightmares haunt Robin Milonas. While serving in Afghanistan in 2004 as an Army Reserve civil affairs officer, the former lieutenant colonel got lost in a minefield while leading a small convoy delivering school supplies to civilians. Even more troubling is the memory of a man who arrived at the main gate of Bagram Air Base carrying a young boy whose leg had been blown off by a land mine. 'I was an outgoing, energetic, determined good soldier who wanted to make the Army a career,' said Milonas, of Puyallup, Wash., who just turned 50. 'Now I am broken.'"

Blacklisted by the Bush government

Salon
by Tim Shorrock

Ever since a New York Times report uncovered warrantless domestic spying by the Bush administration, the issue of NSA surveillance and the 1978 law governing it has been intensely scrutinized and debated. Until now, however, little attention has been paid to dubious activities directly connected with the domestic spying. The Bush administration has used expanded national security powers to undermine the legal rights of people in the United States who are identified as al-Qaida supporters, but who are not charged with terrorist-related crimes. The U.S. Treasury Department and other agencies investigating domestic organizations and U.S. persons rely on the NSA to spy and collect evidence for them — a fundamental shift from the past, when the NSA’s vast eavesdropping powers were used only for foreign intelligence gathering. And in the name of protecting national security, the Bush administration has regularly withheld what it claims is key evidence against those accused — insisting, essentially, that the public accept without question its private conclusions about the suspects’ guilt...

Gitmo trials: Betrayals, backsliding and boycotts

CounterPunch
by Andy Worthington

05/18/08

Anyone who has kept half an eye on the proceedings at the Military Commissions in Guantanamo — the unique system of trials for ‘terror suspects’ that was conceived in the wake of the 9/11 attacks by Vice President Dick Cheney and his close advisers — will be aware that their progress has been faltering at best. After six and a half years, in which they have been ruled illegal by the Supreme Court, derailed by their own military judges, relentlessly savaged by their own military defense lawyers, and condemned as politically motivated by their own former chief prosecutor, they have only secured one contentious result: a plea bargain negotiated by the Australian David Hicks, who admitted to providing ‘material support for terrorism,’ and dropped his well-chronicled claims of torture and abuse by US forces, in order to secure his return to Australia to serve out the remainder of a meager nine-month sentence last March...

Bush, McCain dream on in war land

US President George W Bush and the man who hopes to replace him, Senator John McCain, have divulged to the world their beautiful dreams, in which Middle East weapons have become ploughshares, bitter enemies lie down together as lambs and evil powers abandon nuclear weapons. Finance chief quits McCain campaign over lobbyist ties

United Press International

05/18/08

Tom Loeffler, a Texas congressman turned lobbyist, resigned as finance co-chairman of John McCain’s presidential campaign Sunday. Loeffler is the fifth person to quit a prominent position with McCain because of ties to foreign governments or other special interest groups, The Washington Post reported. Newsweek reported this weekend that his company, The Loeffler Group, had received $15 million for lobbying on behalf of Saudi Arabia and had worked for other foreign governments...

You have perhaps a year, maybe two, before the riots start

Democracy in America

By Bill Moyers

We have fallen under the spell of money, faction, and fear, and the great American experience in creating a different future together has been subjugated to individual cunning in the pursuit of wealth and power -and to the claims of empire, with its ravenous demands and stuporous distractions. A sense of political impotence pervades the country - a mass resignation defined by Goodwyn as "believing the dogma of 'democracy' on a superficial public level but not believing it privately."
