Going Bankrupt: Why the Debt Crisis Is Now the Greatest Threat to the American Republic

Chalmers Johnson writes from TomDispatch: "The military adventurers of the Bush administration have much in common with the corporate leaders of the defunct energy company Enron. Both groups of men thought that they were the 'smartest guys in the room,' the title of Alex Gibney's prize-winning film on what went wrong at Enron. The neoconservatives in the White House and the Pentagon outsmarted themselves. They failed even to address the problem of how to finance their schemes of imperialist wars and global domination."

False pretenses

President George W. Bush and seven of his administration’s top officials, including Vice President Dick Cheney, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, made at least 935 false statements in the two years following September 11, 2001, about the national security threat posed by Saddam Hussein’s Iraq. Nearly five years after the U.S. invasion of Iraq, an exhaustive examination of the record shows that the statements were part of an orchestrated campaign that effectively galvanized public opinion and, in the process, led the nation to war under decidedly false pretenses...

http://umweltinstitut.org/pressemitteilungen/2008/2008_01_17-560.html

http://umweltinstitut.org/genprotest

Presse Information vom 23. Januar 2008

America, on the road to oblivion

Liberty For All

This government is headed by a man in the White House that hasn’t any concept of the meaning of human rights, or of the foundation this union of states was founded on. He is a man who does not know he hasn’t any power whatsoever to make law or to issue edicts as the kings of old did. He will abuse his false authority — power — to order the deaths of thousands in the name of freedom when he cannot even begin to understand ‘freedom’...

Panic at Davos

Slate
by Daniel Gross

01/22/08

Financiers and CEOs come to Davos to escape the grind of SEC filings, subprime write-downs, and EBITDA, and to indulge their inner wonks. It takes some doing. There’s the eight-hour flight to Zurich followed by another couple of hours in a car, bus, or train, chugging slowly up a narrow snowscape, through stands of enormous pines. Then, instead of sitting through sales meetings, placating investors, or scanning bar charts, they can ponder the implications of the human genome project for cancer research, or listen to Tony Blair, or sit in on a panel discussion with food pioneer Alice Waters. It won’t be so easy this week...

Patriotism and native fascism

The Price of Liberty
by Basil Fishbone

01/21/08

When and how do honest good intentions and understandable love for America transition into something more sinister? Americans whom one would want to try to appreciate for their earnest defense of American values and institutions, your neighbors and mine, can and do voice support for America in ways which are patriotic in form only, showing support for the government in Washington, D.C. when that government is engaging in activities which violate its charter. It is not in fact patriotic to support governmental actions which are destructive of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Why is it that police and politicians, soldiers and judges take an oath to defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic? Would following that oath be patriotic, or would following orders in violation of it, be patriotic instead?

Dangerous demagoguery

National Review

01/22/08

Everybody is for change. They differ on the specifics. Uniting people behind the thoughtless mantra of ‘change’ means asking for a blank check in exchange for rhetoric. That deal has been made many times in many places — and millions of people have lived to regret it. It is not too much to ask politicians to talk specifics, instead of trying to sweep us along, turning off our minds and turning on our emotions, with soaring rhetoric. Bernanke presses the panic button

Salon
by Andrew Leonard

01/22/08

Cool and collected — the very model of a careful academic — Ben Bernanke is not the kind of man who, in his constant stream of public speeches, addresses to Congress, and regular updates on the state of the economy, expresses himself with hyperbole or irrational exuberance. He is the antithesis of CNBC’s rabid mad dog of stock speculation, Jim Cramer, forever frothing over with bug-eyed babble. But the hyperlinked global markets of the 21st century measure a Fed chairman by his rate cuts, not his über-rational reasoning. And when you shock the world with an emergency three-quarters of a percentage point cut in the Fed Funds rate that is larger than anything the U.S. has seen in 23 years, your image as Mr. Calm is bound to take a beating...

US paying the price for reckless involvement in Middle East affairs

Five years after he launched it, George Bush’s invasion of Iraq looks even more disastrous than it did at the end of the first year

A failure to think

The Guardian [UK]
by Jonathan Steele

01/21/08

Five years after he launched it, George Bush’s invasion of Iraq looks even more disastrous than it did at the end of the first year. Not only did it uncover no weapons of mass destruction. The invasion has led to a collapse in millions of ordinary Iraqis’ personal security, producing a human rights nightmare and annual rates of killing that dwarf the atrocities of Saddam Hussein’s three decades of power. The damage to the United States has been enormous. As well as the loss of around 4,000 soldiers’ lives, America’s image and reputation in the Middle East have been severely harmed. For Bush and the neocons, the invasion has brought political defeat. Their project for Iraq to become a secular, liberal, pro-western bastion of democracy lies in ruins. The country is run by a narrow-minded group of Shia Islamists with close control over a sectarian army and police force. Many of them are linked to Iran...

Until All the Fish Are Gone

A New York Times editorial states: "Scientists have been warning for years that overfishing is degrading the health of the oceans and destroying the fish species on which much of humanity depends for jobs and food. Even so, it would be hard to frame the problem more dramatically than two recent articles in The Times detailing the disastrous environmental, economic and human consequences of often illegal industrial fishing."

Hemel phone masts revealed

More than 50 powerful mobile phone masts now top buildings and dot streets and fields across Hemel Hempstead.

But despite health concerns over the antennas, clear information on where telecoms firms install their kit is hard to find.

The council is only able to supply residents with a long list of mast sites covering the whole of Dacorum.

How to sink America

Debt Is Sinking America

Chalmers Johnson on military Keynesianism and other evils.

The military adventurers of the Bush administration have much in common with the corporate leaders of the defunct energy company Enron. Both groups of men thought that they were the ’smartest guys in the room,’ the title of Alex Gibney’s prize-winning film on what went wrong at Enron. The neoconservatives in the White House and the Pentagon outsmarted themselves. They failed even to address the problem of how to finance their schemes of imperialist wars and global domination. As a result, going into 2008, the United States finds itself in the anomalous position of being unable to pay for its own elevated living standards or its wasteful, overly large military establishment. Its government no longer even attempts to reduce the ruinous expenses of maintaining huge standing armies, replacing the equipment that seven years of wars have destroyed or worn out, or preparing for a war in outer space against unknown adversaries.
