Comment on: Wi-Fi, the death of us all / You are going to die. Wireless gizmos are devouring your brain, right now. Very sorry at 12/15/2007 8:20 PM PST
While the article was very well written, this trivilization of a very serious problem seems like the SF Chronicle's attempt to make up for its media blackout of a problem that has been around since at least the early 80s if not earlier. Research has connected the rising rates of cancers, CFS, ADHD, Autism, MS, diabetes, insomnia, depression, suicides, behavior problems, etc. to the extreme rise in ambient EMR (electromagnetic radiation) that we are all being exposed to. Brain tumors are now the leading cause of death in children under the age of 16; a recent British newspaper put the rate of Autism now at 1 in 40 (in the US estimates are now in the 1 in 100 range); a recent survey by the CDC put CFIDS at 1 in 40; 40 million Americans now suffer from Insomnia (up 60% from 2000) while 60% have sleep disturbances. Poking fun at the problem is not going to solve it. People, reporters, and politicians need to seriously start taking action - stop being beholden to the cell phone industry.

While the term 'wily' is very accurate to describe these cell phone executives: 'clever at getting what you want, and willing to trick people,' I find it a bit perplexing - or not - why the SF Chronicle isn't covering the above mentioned stories (the BioInitiative, the German Government Warns Against WiFi and Cell Phone Usage, the Australian Democrats Connect Wireless Technology with Disease States - unless of course it is to belittle people's concerns. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that Motorola's ads appear on these webpages about every 10 seconds or so.

'Prolonged exposure to radiofrequency and microwave radiation from cell phones, cordless phones, cell towers, WI-FI and other wireless technologies have been linked to physical symptoms including headache, fatigue, sleeplessness, dizziness, changes in brainwave activity, and impairment of concentration and memory.' In Sept. 2007, the German government warned its citizenry not to use mobile phones (only in emergencies) and WiFi. In Italy, children are now banned from bringing cell phones to schools. In Dec. 2007, an Australian Democrats commissioned discussion paper found microwave radiation from cell phone towers to very likely be behind the drastic rise in disease sates like cancer, diabetes, asthma, allergies and Alzheime's disease.

There is a complete unawareness of the dangers posed by microwave radiation among Americans. Brain tumors are the leading cause of death in children under the age of 16; a survey by the CDC has shown that 1 in 40 Americans now suffer from CFIDS (which btw started in 1984 with the 1st commercial 1G cell phone system); a recent article in the British newspaper put the rate of Autism also at 1 in 40 (estimates in the US are about 1 in 100); 40 million Americans take sleeping pills for insomnia (up 60% from 2000) while 60% suffer from sleep disturbances. In Aug. 2007, a report - issued by an international group of renowned scientists, researchers, doctors, and public health experts - entitled the BioInitiative (
http://www.bioinitiative.org ) warns "Wireless technologies that rely on microwave radiation to send emails and voice communication are thousands of times stronger than levels reported to cause some health impacts...."

I find it a bit perplexing why there is no mention of the dangers posed by WiFi. But then again if one thinks about the money and power the cell phone industry possesses, then it is possible to also imagine the cause of this media blackout. Having said that, the German government has recently warned its populace against using WiFi - and that of cell phones only in emergencies. In Austria, the Vienna Physician's Association has issued similar warnings. A recent report - called the BioInitiative - issued by a group of internationally renowned scientists, researchers, and public health professionals has clearly stated that present levels of ambient radiation are dangerous and 1000 times what they should be. The European Environmental Agency has also highlighted the risk on its website. Over forty million Americans take sleep medication for insomnia . A recent British report has stated one in forty children now suffer from Autism. Brain tumors are now the number cause of death in children.
