Secret CIA Jail on British Island to Be Investigated

Ian Cobain and Richard Norton-Taylor report for The Guardian UK: "Allegations that the CIA held al-Qaida suspects for interrogation at a secret prison on sovereign British territory are to be investigated by MPs, the Guardian has learned. The all-party foreign affairs committee is to examine long-standing suspicions that the agency has operated one of its so-called 'black site' prisons on Diego Garcia, the British overseas territory in the Indian Ocean that is home to a large US military base."

Ron Paul: A perfect storm in a sea of statism

LewRockwell.Com
by Karen De Coster

10/18/07

Though I do not support the existence of an executive office, or even voting for that matter, somebody is going to be elected president when all of this is over. All choices but one will lead to a furtherance of the current, neoconservative-social democrat, totalitarian dictatorship, which is why I support Ron Paul. Though I remain a persevering, anti-state libertarian, I will cheer on this libertarian Constitutionalist in the greatest attempt, ever, to snatch the limelight from two near-identical, establishment political parties and turn the attention toward a platform of ideas that will spiritedly disrupt the entrenched caste...

Blackwater and Bush’s war

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Sheldon Richman

10/15/07

If Iraq is really a sovereign country, which is the fiction maintained by the Bush administration, then why aren’t the Blackwater USA personnel who are accused of murdering 17 innocent Iraqis accountable to the criminal justice system in that country? Private contractors such as Blackwater have had immunity from criminal prosecution, but Congress now has voted to make them liable under U.S. law. That seems odd...

Who restarted the Cold War?

LewRockwell.Com
by Pat Buchanan

10/19/07

With the end of the Cold War, the KGB was abolished and the Comintern disappeared. But the National Endowment for Democracy, Freedom House and other Cold War agencies, funded with tens of millions in tax-exempt and tax dollars, engineered the ouster of pro-Russian regimes in Serbia, Ukraine and Georgia, and sought the ouster of the regime in Minsk. At the Cold War’s end, the United States was given one of the great opportunities of history: to embrace Russia, largest nation on earth, as partner, friend, ally. Our mutual interests meshed almost perfectly. There was no ideological, territorial, historic or economic quarrel between us, once communist ideology was interred. We blew it...

Acid oceans increasing rapidly

Mother Jones
by Julia Whitty

10/17/07

We’ve known for a while that ocean acidification is a bad bad thing. Now new research into corals using boron isotopes indicates the world-ocean has become about one third of a pH unit more acid over the past fifty years, reports the Australian Research Council. The acidity is caused by a CO2 buildup in the atmosphere, which then dissolves into the oceans — a development likely to be lethal for animals with chalky skeletons, who just happen to comprise more than a third of the planet’s marine life...

Mukasey’s answer on torture frustrates Democrats

CNN

10/18/07

The refusal of attorney general-nominee Michael Mukasey to directly disavow waterboarding and other harsh interrogation techniques frustrated Senate Democrats Thursday. Under tough questioning on torture policy on the second day of his confirmation hearings, the retired federal judge repeated his view that torture is unconstitutional, but he would not categorically declare any specific techniques to be prohibited...

Senators Clash With Nominee Over Torture and Limits of Law

Philip Shenon, reporting for The New York Times, writes, "On the second day of confirmation hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Mr. Mukasey went further than he had the day before in arguing that the White House had constitutional authority to act beyond the limits of laws enacted by Congress, especially when it came to national defense."

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/101907B.shtml

Richardson's Confirmation, a Guide for Mukasey's

Elizabeth Holtzman, writing for Truthout, says: "Congressional Democrats have issued subpoenas, demanded testimony of key White House aides, negotiated in good faith with the White House to obtain release of relevant documents to inform confirmation hearings for attorney general nominee Michael Mukasey - all to no avail." She sees precedent in the Watergate era as advice for Congress today.

Wie die Industriegesellschaft sich selbst zerstört

München, 18.10.2007

Die ödp-München lädt ein:

"Vorwärts in die Steinzeit? Wie die Industriegesellschaft sich selbst zerstört“ Referent: Martin Kraus, M.A., Philosoph

Donnerstag, 08.

Trickle-down Tyranny in DuPage County

by Deanna Spingola

The First Amendment states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." The government, an artificial entity, was established by the people to protect their God-given rights. The government did not, through the Constitution, grant "rights." Rather, the Constitution prohibits the government from seizing individual rights........
