Confronting Empire - Freedom Next Time

Video - John Pilger

The great liberal thinker Walter Lippmann once described the public as a bewildered herd. This contempt is shared today by those who claim his elite legacy, in politics and the media. Why? Because they fear that the so-called herd will suddenly change direction.

"Everybody Knows the Clock is Ticking

Yet nobody knows what time it is.

By Jim Kirwan

For most of the last ten days the news from Washington has been punctuated by the bizarre antics of Dick Cheney - the man that puts the 'Vice' in the US presidency. History gave us all a lesson during the Nixon years and Watergate, when the line between the laws and those who either make or enforce those laws was re-emphasized.

White House Rejects Subpoenas on Prosecutor Firings

The Bush administration asserted executive privilege and rejected subpoenas from two congressional committees probing last year's firings of eight U.S. attorneys.

Conyers slams Bush for refusing to answer subpoenas

"This response indicates the reckless disrespect this administration has for the rule of law."

Legislators Consider Fixes to Supreme Court Rulings

"As the Supreme Court's term winds to a close this week," writes Elana Schor of The Hill, "lawmakers are mulling the future of a thriving breed of bill: the high court 'fix.' Members of both parties are pressing or planning at least six bills to clarify recent Supreme Court rulings, signaling what may become a new era of Congressional sensitivity to court decisions that can be remedied with legislation."

GOP Skepticism on Iraq Growing

"Key Republican senators," write Karen DeYoung and Shailagh Murray of the Washington Post, "signaling increasing GOP skepticism about President Bush's strategy in Iraq, have called for a reduction in US forces and launched preemptive efforts to counter a much-awaited administration progress report due in September."

Will Your House Do the NASDAQ Meltdown?

Dean Baker, Truthout columnist, writes: "The latest data on housing sales showed that the inventory of unsold homes climbed to 4.4 million in May, yet another record. The current inventory would be more than a full year of housing sales in the mid-nineties, before the housing bubble began to take off. There is also a record inventory of new homes for sale. Economists usually expect that excess supply leads to a drop in prices, and in this case, there is a considerable excess supply of houses."

Vodafone’s new mast move in Carlanstown

Wednesday June 27 2007

John Feeney CARLANSTOWN residents will be closely monitoring a fresh planning application from Vodafone Ireland Ltd lodged in the past week to site a 24m mobile phone antenna at Balreask Road, Carlanstown, on the Kells side of Maudlin Bridge.

Locals have campaigned strongly against the same firm’s attempt to seek retention of a mobile phone mast in the village which, they claimed, was far too close both to the primary school and new housing estates.

The "Cashless" Implant Society on the Horizon

by Attorney Constance Cumbey

There are days reading the news that I have to pinch myself. Surely this is some type of a bad dream from which I shall soon awake. Unfortunately, the painful realization is that I am awake and this Orwellian nightmare is really happening. This time, it's trying to get under our skin -- literally. Despite serious health concerns, which even the AMA acknowledges, they push for the implants anyway. Looking behind the action, I find power, money, and an old player in the form of "Verichip," variously known at different times as "Digital Angel," and "Applied Digital Solutions.".......
