A professor at Bristol University has called for an inquiry into the dangers of Wi-Fi wireless internet technology.
‘The research hasn’t been done. Therefore we cannot assume that there are no effects,’ Professor Dennis Henshaw, professor of human radiation at Bristol University told the Independent on Sunday (IoS).
‘I would be in favour of an inquiry into the dangers of Wi-Fi,’ he continued. ‘This technology is being wheeled out without any checks and balances.’
Concerns over the health effects of the electromagnetic fields generated by Wi-Fi devices are beginning to mount following news that the chairman of the Health Protection Agency, Sir William Stewart, has called for an official investigation.
On Sunday, the IoS revealed that Professor Lawrie Challis, the head of the Government’s committee on mobile phone safety, has warned children against placing Wi-Fi enabled laptops on their laps.
Professor Alan Preece, also from Bristol University, urged caution:
‘No one is really aware of what we are dealing with,’ he said. ‘The Department for Trade and Industry needs to take the lead and do some investigation.’

Dr Tim Norris- 30/04/2007 19:51:54 Until circa year 2000, I had never experienced tinnitus. I was late in buying a mobile telephone. Each time I used it, I felt nausious. I made a miskake of using the mobile telephone continuously for circa 20 minutes; it seemed during the conversation that there was much bakground noise - the problem was that the noise continued after the call was terminated. My life was plagued with severe tinnitus and headaches for at least two years thereafter. Special medication helped (Seretonin uptake inhibitors) but still I ahve some background tnnintus. The tinnitus level now rises as soon as anyone activcates their mobile telephone in close proximity to me (i.e. nearer than 5 metres). Mobile telephone technology and similarly mobile telephones are not safe technology. Many years ago, no-one question the health risks of smoking - now it is a known health risk - just wait, mobile telephones and such like will sometime in the future also be correctly recognized as the health risk they really present. By that time, most of the Worlds population will have been irradiated. less
